August 20, 2013- Welcome Back!!! • Bell Work: On your “Bell Work” sheet you picked up at the door, write down the date in the first box and answer the following questions: What are you most excited about for 8th grade? What are your goals for this year? What are 2 fun things you did this summer? • ACTIVITIES • Bell Work • Meet Mrs. Butsch (Sounds like “Bush”) • Facebook Page activity • Mrs. Butsch’s Classroom Rules and Procedures FUN SCIENCE FACT: Scientists have the dated the Earth as being between 4 and 5 billion years old!

  3. August 21, 2013 (Wednesday) • Bell Work: What are the 5 steps you do when you ENTER my classroom? What are the 5 steps you do before you EXIT my classroom? • ACTIVITIES • Go over Bell Work • Assign Computers for the year (Do NOT open computer!) • Mrs. Butsch’s Rules and Procedures • Facebook Assignment Due by FIRDAY FUN SCIENCE FACT: Hawaii is moving towards Japan at the speed of 10cm a year. This is because they are on different tectonic plates. • HOMEWORK • Science folder due by FRIDAY 8/23 • Bring an electronic Pic. of yourself by TOMORROW (Wednesday).   4. August 22, 2013 (Thursday) • Bell Work: What are the steps you take if you were gone, and need to make up work in science class? When is homework usually due? What is a “Late Assignment Sheet?” • ACTIVITIES • Log into your assigned computers • Steps on how to create a new folder in your H drive • How to open and save “Facebook Assignment” • Work on Facebook Assignment FUN SCIENCE FACT: Rock found at the bottom of the Grand Canyon is around 2 billion years old. • HOMEWORK • Science folder due TOMORROW!!! • Mrs. Butsch’s Classroom Rules and Procedures Quiz on TOMORROW 8/23 • Facebook page due IN CLASS tomorrow

  5. H: Drive Steps/ How to Save • 1. Click on “Start” then click on “Computer” • 2. Find where is says your first and last name and “(H:)” at the end and click on it. • Click on “New Folder” • When a “New Folder” pops up in your H drive, RIGHT CLICK and then click on “Rename.” • When the file is Highlighted, Rename the file “Mrs. Butsch- SCIENCE” • 1. When you download the “Facebook Getting to Know You” activity, click on “File” then click “SAVE AS” • 2. When the file pops up, click on “Computer” on the left hand side. • 3. Find your H drive in “Computer” and then click on it. • RENAME the facebook file to Your FIRST&LAST name then facebook • EX. “Billy Smith- Facebook” 4. Then click SAVE

What do you do if you need to get up out of your seat? • ACTIVITIES • Review Rules • Take Rules and Procedures Quiz-Folder Check • When finished with Quiz- Get your computer and finish your Facebook Page FUN SCIENCE FACT: Mt Everest is the highest mountain on earth, its peak reaches 8,848 metres (29029 feet) above sea level. • HOMEWORK • Facebook page due TODAY • No homework over the weekend 

  7. August 26, 2013 (Monday) • Bell Work: Based on your previous knowledge, what specific topics do you think we will be learning this year in Earth Science? (Don’t say “We will learn about the Earth!” Be specific!) • ACTIVITIES • Grade Rules Quiz • Earth Science Intro. “What is Earth Science” • Video and Powerpoint • How to use Google Earth • Google Earth Activity • Edmodo Account set up?????? FUN SCIENCE FACT: The worlds largest desert is the Sahara, it covers about one third of Africa! • HOMEWORK • Google Earth Activity due Wednesday 8/28 at the end of class. • This assignment should not be taken home. It is an “In-Class Assignment”

  8. August 27, 2013 (Tuesday) • Bell Work: Make a list of what you think are the most important places on planet Earth. Come up with at least 10! • ACTIVITIES • Google Earth Activity- Alien Visitor • Work independently • Work with a partner • Edmodo Account set up Friday????? FUN SCIENCE FACT: Mother Earth has a generous waistline: At the equator, the circumference of the globe is 24,901 miles (40,075 kilometers) • HOMEWORK • Google Earth Activity due TOMORROW 8/28 at the end of class. • This assignment should not be taken home. It is an “In-Class Assignment”

August 28, 2013 • Bell Work: Based on your Google Earth findings yesterday, which findings are natural things and why are they so important to life on Earth? • ACTIVITIES • Go over Fire Drill Procedure • Google Earth Activity- Alien Visitor • Working in groups of 3-4 to collaborate on a final list of 10 things/factors/places that make Earth so special. • Edmodo Account set up Friday FUN SCIENCE FACT: Earth isn't just spinning: It's also moving around the sun at 67,000 miles (107,826 km) per hour. • HOMEWORK • Google Earth Activity due TODAY 8/28 at the end of class. • REMINDER: I will be collecting these assignments as they are at the end of class even if you are not done.

  10. August 29, 2013 (Thursday) • Bell Work: Review from last year- What are the 6 steps of the scientific method? (Use my classroom for help ) • ACTIVITIES • Class discussion over Google Earth • Hand out and assign textbooks • “The Nature of Science” Section 1 pg. 6 in the textbook- REVIEW FUN SCIENCE FACT: Moonquakes, or "earthquakes" on the moon, do occur, though they are less common and less intense than those that shake Earth. • HOMEWORK • Chapter one Section one review: Read pages 6-14 questions on page 14 numbers 1-4 on a separate sheet of paper. • Bell Work due tomorrow

August 30, 2013 (Friday) • Bell Work: Why is it so important for scientists to conduct experiments more than once? • ACTIVITIES • Turn in Bell Work. • Turn in homework • Edmodo Account set up in the Lab • Edmodo Quiz FUN SCIENCE FACT: The summit of Mount Everest is higher above sea level than the summit of any other mountain, extending some 29,029 feet (8,848 meters) high.  • HOMEWORK • Get Edmodo account #s to parents • Chapter one Section one review: Read pages 6-14 questions on page 14 numbers 1-4 on a separate sheet of paper. DUE TODAY • Bell Work due TODAY

What is the difference between the control variable and constants in an experiment? • ACTIVITIES • Science news update • Group activity: Science Process Review • Notes • Work on homework FUN SCIENCE FACT: Coral reefs support the most species per unit area of any of the planet's ecosystems, rivaling rain forests.

Give an example of each. • ACTIVITIES • Turn in and grade homework • Observation Activity • Whole class observations • Group observations

September 5, 2013 (Thursday) • HOMEWORK • Study for your observations vs. inference quiz-Tomorrow • Observation skills activity due at the end of the hour • 8th girls home vball game vs. Clark Tonight • Bell Work: In your bell work, give an example of 3 observations and 3 inferences following those observations. EXAMPLE: Mrs. Butsch is drinking coffee this morning (observation). Mrs. Butsch must be very tired and needs caffeine to wake up (inference). • ACTIVITIES • News Update • Finish Observation Activity • Group observations • FUN SCIENCE FACT: The Pacific Ocean is by far Earth's largest ocean basin, covering an area of about 59 million square miles (155 million square kilometers) and containing more than half of the free water on Earth.

Why or Why not? Based on your previous knowledge, write a good hypothesis statement about testing different types of energy drinks. • ACTIVITIES • Finish Identifying Variables with the Simpsons-Work on your own then with a partner • Take notes over Scientific Method • FUN SCIENCE FACTThere have been 20 ice ages in the past two-and-a-half million years, each lasting about 100,000 years.

Why is this so important? • ACTIVITIES • Welcome Mrs. Englis!!! • FUN SCIENCE FACTThere have been 20 ice ages in the past two-and-a-half million years, each lasting about 100,000 years.

What are the 6 steps of the scientific method? • ACTIVITIES • Finish SM note taking • Go over SM energy lab • Get started on the lab • FUN FACT: September 11, happened 12 years ago today. Mrs. Butsch was in 9th grade 1st hour English class when it happened, found out in 2nd hour Spanish, and watched the news about it in 3rd hour Science class.
