  1. Bodies Chris King Eylem Caner Pei-Chi Wu

  2. Bodies • New media theory--- It has been accused of splitting off the body from technology . • Cartesianism is the name given to the philosophical doctrine ofRenéDescartes. • Overview of Cartesianism (Disembodied)

  3. René DescartesMind-body problem Such a mind can perhaps interact with a physical body, but it does not exist in the body. The world divided into three areas of existence : *Physical body *Mind *God

  4. "Cogito ergo sum”I think, therefore I am. • Focus On: • 1.Representation: Positive aspects & Negativeaspects  • 2.Mixed Reality

  5. Representation • When looking at Cartesianism in Digital Media, we can see positive and negative aspects: + When interacting without a representation of the body, we can break down barriers of prejudice and stereotyping + We can transcend physical barriers of time and space when using non-physical interaction, to communicate quickly on a global level - The anonymity created by this way of interacting can lead to the manipulation of information, and in the worst cases serious fraud http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BuE98oeL-e0 - Cutting off physical interaction cuts down the level of information we receive which can lead to misinterpretation • James Borg states that human communication consists of 93% body language and paralinguistic clues, while only 7% of communication consists of words themselves.

  6. Representation • When considering the ethical questions involved, we can see two main grey areas that are of concern: • How the producer presents information: Manipulation can have severe consequences - How the consumer perceives information: Not getting the whole story can be equally severe

  7. Mixed Reality What is Virtual reality? Computer-simulated environments that can simulate physical presence in places in the real world, as well as in imaginary worlds. Wikipedia: Mixed reality (MR) refers to the merging of real and virtual worlds to produce new environments and visualisations where physical and digital objects co-exist and interact in real time. A mix of reality, augmented reality, augmented virtuality and virtual reality.

  8. Mixed Reality The core difference between VR and MR is the central role played by the body in the interface of the virtual. Motor activity is key to fluid and functional crossing between virtual and physical. Myron Krueger claims: ‘the human interface is evolving towards more natural information ... . 3D space is what we evolved to understand. It is more primitive, not more advanced.’ He believes that physical involvement is the measure of immersion. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nQR49JGySTM

  9. Mixed Reality Antonio Damasio believes that consciousness can be likened to a “movie-in-the-brain” with no external spectator, then VR is something like a movie-outside-the-brain, with no external spectator. Instead, Hansen claims, MR paradigm treats VR as just one more realm. In this way, content is less important than the means to access, and how it’s perceived. All reality is mixed reality. Our embodied form of life creates reality through motor activity.

  10. Mixed reality appears from the moment that tools first delocalized and distributed human sensation, notably touch and vision. Our bodies are our means/tools of understanding the reality that surrounds us, which are also part of reality itself, it has boundaries. Therefor it also limits us in understanding/perceving reality as a whole.

  11. Questions: Do you think the body and mind should be separated or together? Is it morally correct to misrepresent the body? Can mixed reality help us overcometheobstaclesof thephysical body?
