  2. Introduction • Have you ever heard of Clara Barton? Not that many people know much about her. She is basically a nurse that started the American Red Cross (that’s all that most people know about Clara) . But no one’s life story is really that simple. Read on!

  3. Basic Information • Name: Clara Barton  • Born on : December 25, 1821  • Born at: North Oxford, Massachusetts  • Died on: April 12, 1912 • Died at: Glen Echo, Maryland

  4. Clara: the name • Clara means “famous , brilliant” in Latin. • Clara was sometimes called “baby” or “tot" as a child. • Clara was known as the “Angel of the Battlefield” in her nursing career.

  5. Clara’s Childhood • Clara was born Christmas day in 1821.She was born in Boston Massachusetts. She was the youngest of 5 children born to Sarah and Captain Stephen Barton. She was the center of attention for years in her home. She was very shy when she went to Colonel Richard Stone's school. She did well, but her shyness got in the way. At age 8, she was transferred to a boarding school to overcome this obstacle. She was so overwhelmed, she did even worse. She came home at age 11.

  6. Young adult • At age 15, Clara started teaching. She then was a clerk in the patent office in Washington DC. When the civil war started, she wanted to help.

  7. The War • Clara had lots of trouble getting permission to serve in the war. Finally, A man named Officer Rucker let her serve in the war. She nursed until her father became ill. She returned home, a few days passed, and he died. After her grief, she went back to nursing at the battlefield.

  8. Older Clara • Clara was forty-four years old by the time the war ended, and she helped set up hospitals for other wars. She started the red cross and tried to get the president to join. After some pleading, he agreed. She became the president of this organization.

  9. Death • Clara died from pneumonia at age 90. She was getting a lot of fan mail, andher dream lived on.
