  2. Knowledge of Church Government is Essential • The church is a body, a household, a kingdom—all require proper organization and respect for authority. • Christ is the Head of the Church (Col. 1:18). • We must have proper respect for His authority and Pattern.

  3. Jesus: The “Chief Shepherd” “and when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will received the crown of glory that does not fade away” (1 Pet. 5:4) Greek:archipoimen arche (chief, first place) + poimen (shepherd, pastor) cf. Eph. 4:11; Lk. 2:8

  4. Jesus the Chief Shepherd • The Shepherd of the sheep (John 10:2) • The good Shepherd (John 10:14) • One Shepherd for One flock (John 10:16). The Lord Jesus is that One Great Shepherd (Heb. 13:20)

Jesus: “Possessor of all Authority” “And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, ‘All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth’” Matthew 28:18 • what is the claim? • who gave this authority? (see 1 Corinthians 15:24-28) • How much legislative authority does that leave elders and preachers?

Jesus: Possessor of All Authority • “And He put all things under His feet, and gave Him to be head over all things to the church” (Eph. 1:22 → 1 Peter 3:22) • “but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head—Christ—from whom the whole body, joined and knit together. . .” (Eph. 4:15,16) • “For the husband is head of the wife, as also Christ is the head of the church; and He is the Savior of the body” (Eph. 5:23)

Seeking Jesus’ Authority Today • God Speaks through the Son (Heb. 1:1-2), who speaks from heaven (Heb. 12:25). • All of Jesus words revealed through the apostles; words He spoke while on earth (John 14:25-26) and words He spoke from heaven (John 16:12-15). • The written word is the word of God (1 Cor. 14:37). • Through the Scriptures we have the complete pattern (2 Tim. 3:16-17; 2 Pet. 1:3).
