  2. September 24, 2012 It was an easy decision to use Twitter to start my professional learning network. My PLN started small and consisted of people that were recommended to us by the class instructors.

Dean Shareski • @shareski • Dean Shareski was one of the people that I was recommended to follow to start my PLN. • He tweets on a consistent basis and are always very informative. • Talks lots about new developments within schools and about new technologies that are being utilized by schools. • His site http://shareski.ca is the first time I have seen a digital business card that has links to all his online profiles. This is a convenient tool to have at a job interview if they ask about your online presence.

  4. Alec Couros • @courosa • Has undoubtedly been my favorite “tweeter” so far. Has posted tons of helpful links to websites that I have bookmarked for future reference. • Always quick with an answer should you have a question and is posting all the time. • Good to have a person that can keep you up to date with new technologies and with him being an Ed. tech professor he can explain them to you. • I’ve been able to find lots of new people to connect with through Alec’s contacts. • Having contacts outside of the city where you reside is also a good idea.

Matthew Wilson • @caliwilsonswag • Matt is a person that I have known for a very long time that also went into education, however after he graduated he took a job in Fort Vermillion. • Twitter has enabled us to keep in contact and share new ideas that we have come across from either school or work. • As an aspiring teacher he has been helpful whenever I have had questions about how to handle situations in a class, or how do devise lesson plans, and most recently how he incorporates technology into his class, and he has given me plenty of ideas. • Twitter is great for creating a PLN of new people that can help you during your career, but I think that its equally if not more important to have people that you know that you can ask anything and who will be able to keep you up to date on the latest in teaching before you even get into a classroom.

  7. Conclusion • In the time since I started my PLN I have began tweeting and sharing ideas. My group of people that I am following has more than doubled, and I even have a few followers of my own. It’s a start, but more than anything it has shown me that making connections through Twitter is not overly difficult and can be a great tool for years to come. • I have mainly been searching for people that are social studies teacher in high school or university, who also use technology. • I have also been searching for people in the United States. My family is from the U.S. and it’s a place that I can see myself going back to once I’ve graduated. • Using Twitter I have been able to start conversations with students who are also in edit 202 and they can be a good source as we all go into the profession together. I have also been able to talk with existing teachers about how they use technology in the class. • In a short period of time I have learnt quite a bit of information off of twitter and I only expect that to continue and grow as my PLN grows.
