  2. BASIC LAW OF MAGNETISM Like poles repel; unlike poles attract. Although it is possible to isolate positive and negative charges, it is impossible to isolateNORTHand SOUTH magnetic poles. Magnetic monopoles do not exist.

  3. Magnetic Fields • All magnetic fields are the result of moving electric charges. • For solid materials, the moving charges are the individual electrons rotating about the atomic nuclei.

  4. Atom • Most materials do not have a magnetic field because the orbiting electrons are randomly oriented and their individual magnetic fields cancel out. • In a permanent magnet, the fields of the individual atoms are lined up so that they add rather than cancel each other out.

  5. Compass • A compass is made from a sliver of magnetic material that can swing freely.

  6. Earth Structure • The Earth's interior consists of rock and metal. It is made up of four main layers: 1) the inner core2) the outer core: a liquid molten core of nickel and iron 3) the mantle 4) the crust • It is hypothesized that the outer core movements generate the Earth's magnetic field, called the magnetosphere.

  7. Earth Tilt • Earth's magnetic field is shaped like a gigantic bar magnet. • The Geographic North Pole and the North Magnetic Pole are not actually in the same place; likewise for the South Poles.

  8. Magnetosphere • The Earth magnetic field is surrounded in a region called the magnetosphere. • The magnetosphere prevents most of the particles from the sun from hitting the Earth.

  9. Northern Lights • The aurora (northern lights) are protons and electrons that travel from the Sun along the Earth's magnetic field lines. These particles are very energetic much more than the power of lightning: 20 million amps at 50,000 volts is channeled into the aurora. This causes the gases of the atmosphere light . • The aurora is also known as the northern and southern lights. The aurora can be seen from Fairbanks, Alaska, Oslo, Norway, and the Northwest Territories. • The lights of the aurora come in different colors. Oxygen atoms give off green light and sometimes red. Nitrogen molecules glow red, blue, and purple.

  10. Earth and Compass • The Earth Magnetic North and South Poles are potentially quite confusing. • The North Pole of the compass needle points North (roughly). The compass north needle is a Earth's North Geographical Pole is actually a South Pole of a magnet!
