  3. This includes: Composition – What is it made of? Structure – How is it held together? Properties – What characteristics does this substance have that we can distinguish it from other materials? Changes – What happens when the substance is heated or mixed with something else? Two Characteristics of Matter: (a) Mass (b) Volume
