The Post American World • Fareed Zakaria states in his preface that “The greatest challenge for Barack Obama and this generation of leaders is to create a new system of international relations, one that produces genuine and effective global cooperation on the great common issues that plague us all. This is the great project of the twenty-first century: a new architecture that ensures peace, growth, and freedom for the world.” • Does a leader like this actually exist?

The Numbers • Obama: 52.9% • McCain: 45.7% • Nader (now as an Independent): .56% • The highest voter turnout since the election of 1960 (or 1968 depending on whose estimate of registered voters is used). Either way, the estimated turnout ranges between 61.7 and 63% of registered voters. • Why did everyone turn out for this election?

What is Obama’s Foreign Policy? • Here was the plan for his foreign policy: • "bringing a responsible end to this war in Iraq and refocusing on the critical challenges in the broader region," • "by building the first truly 21st century military and showing wisdom in how we deploy it," • "by marshalling a global effort to meet a threat that rises above all others in urgency – securing, destroying, and stopping the spread of weapons of mass destruction," • "rebuild and construct the alliances and partnerships necessary to meet common challenges and confront common threats", and • "while America can help others build more secure societies, we must never forget that only the citizens of these nations can sustain them."

We will extend a hand [to leaders who cling to power through corruption and deceit and the silencing of dissent] if you are willing to unclench your fist • Forge a hard-earned peace in Afghanistan • Roll back the specter of a warming planet; we [can no longer] consume the world’s resources without regard to effect

Obama’s Foreign Policy • Added since January 2009: • Refocusing on the threat from al Qaeda in Afghanistan and Pakistan • Keeping nuclear weapons out of the hands of terrorists • Promoting peace and security in Israel and the Middle East • Re-energizing America’s alliances • Maintaining core American values (closing Guantanamo Bay prison) • Ending the crisis in Darfur and ensuring Sudan’s long-term stability • Restoring American leadership in Latin America

What progress has been made? • Today we are going to create an Obama “scorecard” • Assign a value from 1 to 10 on each of the current foreign policy issues based on how far along Obama is on achieving it • If the issue has not been solved, what, if anything, has occurred/changed to alter Obama’s plans? (a reality check)
