Important facts • One of the first Romantics • Known for his art as much as for his poetry • Illustrated his poetry, printed it himself • Not popular during his lifetime • Most people thought he was weird, confused, and insane • A lot of his work was inspired by visions • Said to have seen visions of his dead brother, angels, and God

Most important work • Two collections of poetry • Songs of Innocence • Songs of Experience • Published in one volume in 1794 to demonstrate “the two Contrary States of the Human Soul.” • Innocence: a state of genuine love and naïve trust toward all humankind, accompanied by unquestioned belief in Christian doctrine. • Experience: realizing that the English Church and other institutions use doctrine as social control; an awareness of cruelty and hypocrisy.
