York University Research • The 3rd largest university in Canada with long-standing research specialization in areas such as space science, vision science, aboriginal and indigenous studies, history, psychology, violence and conflict resolution, and atmospheric chemistry. • Home to more large-scale partnered projects funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada than any other Canadian university (2011). • A national leader in Knowledge Mobilization and a founding member of ResearchImpact -- Canada’s Knowledge Mobilization Network in partnership with five Canadian universities. • Home to 28 research centres and institutes with a strong history of collaborative, interdisciplinary, and innovative research. • Comprised of over 1400 researchers, including many leaders in their respective fields. York’s faculty complement includes Canada Research Chairs, Fellows of the Royal Society of Canada and Distinguished Research Professors.

Knowledge Translation @ York Innovation York: Technology commercialization and industry liaison unit within the Office of the Vice-President Research & Innovation • Innovation York provides a single point of contact for industry seeking academic partners and academic researchers seeking industry partners and/or to commercialize novel and innovative technologies. • Services include the creation and support of partnerships between industry and academic researchers to develop innovative research projects and enable industry to access York University research expertise • Development & commercialization of intellectual property resulting from scientific research • Includes collaborative relationships with industry, enabled by broadband access

York & Broadband • Advanced Broadband Enabled Learning (ABEL) Unit: uses broadband to connect learning to experience and helps develop and deliver curriculum over broadband. • Recently collaborated with Ministry of Environment and Toronto and Region Conservation Authority to develop curriculum and delivery for source water protection throughout Ontario (project completed March 31, 2012) • Leaders in deployment of O3 the on line collaboration platform provided by ORION, Ontario's broadband network • through the Knowledge Mobilization Unit York supports the formation of on line communities for large scale distributed research projects, eg: Re-imagining Long Term Care is a 5 year, $2.5M SSHRC funded project with academic and non-academic partners across Canada and around the world. O3 is their primary means of communication and collaboration

  5. York & Broadband • York has connected the Markham Convergence Centre to the ORION network • enabling entrepreneurs and companies access to high speed networks and to ORION services creating a unique resource or innovators in York Region • potential for other York Region municipalities

Knowledge Translation @ York Knowledge Mobilization: Supporting the active, two-way exchange of research & expertise between knowledge creators & knowledge users • York has established a unique institutional infrastructure for addressing social impacts of our work and supporting the active, two-way exchange of research & expertise between knowledge creators & knowledge users • York’s Knowledge Mobilization Unit is a national leader in connecting research and people for social innovation • Activity Update (2006-2010) # of collaborations brokered 227 Community partner funding raised $810K Research contract funding raised $1.2M Total KMb associated grant funding $16M

Knowledge Translation @ York • Social innovation is finding new ways to address persistent social and environmental challenges • Knowledge Mobilization is a process that can enhance social innovation • Strength Investments is a social innovation. • A United Way York Region program that has invested $300,000 in community led initiatives to address community level opportunities. It arose out of a collaboration fostered by the KMb Unit. • LassondeSchool of Engineering will help prepare the Renaissance Engineer for employment across sector • Social collaborations are enabled by broadband access

Graduate Training • York has 6,000 graduate students working in all disciplines • Graduate student interns are one mechanism to support collaboration with the public, private and non-profit sectors • MITACS has funding to leverage investments in graduate student internships • NSERC has funding for graduate students and post-doctoral fellows working with industry
