Our area: Sandwell and West Birmingham • SWB commissioning area serves around 530,000 patients • Diversity – 76% majority BME Birmingham, > 200 Languages • Deprivation – 10th and 12th most deprived wards • Health inequalities prevail “We will work across boundaries to improve the health of the communities we serve and the quality of health and social care services provided to those communities”

Migrant Health Challenges • Health challenges- e.g. TB, HIV • Deprivation- leading to health inequalities • Antenatal sessions- delayed access • Language barriers • Confusion- which NHS service? • Not registered with a GP practice • Attending A&E instead of alternatives • Training for Health care teams

Sandwell and West Birmingham has recently seen stark increases in migrants settling in the area: • - Lack of English speaking skills • - Poor understanding of the health care system • Leading to: • - Inappropriate access of health services • - Delayed presentation • - Poor Health Outcomes • - Increasing Cost to NHS

SWB CCG Equality and Diversity Strategy • Develop the capability of primary care • Improve uptake and experience of primary care for new migrant communities • Accelerate Right Care Right Here • Treat Mental ill health and Promote Good Health • Improve Maternity and Early Years • Improve antenatal pathways for new migrant women

  10. Equality and Diversity Leadership Equality and Diversity Sub Committee. • Chaired by Ranjit Sondhi – Vice Chair CCG • Andy Williams – Accountable Officer • 5 GP Equality leads representing each Locality Commissioning Group • Voluntary and Community Sector representation.

  11. What we need to do to understand migrant needs? • Understand health needs • Engage with migrant community organisations • Community model- improving links between the voluntary sector and GPs • Robust data

  12. Migrant Working Group • Monthly meeting to progress strategy • Representatives: • Clinical lead • Lay patient representatives • Local authority • Health partners • Voluntary organisations

  13. Improving access to services – what we are doing: • Improved Pathways for Patient Registration • Training for GPs and practice staff • Understanding migrants perceptions on UK Health Services • Migrant Needs Analysis • Education and awareness campaign
