The Brown Manatee, a marine mammal found in the Arctic Ocean, averages 800 pounds and can reach lengths of up to 10 feet. This gentle giant feeds on around 60 varieties of grass and plants. Females give birth to about five younglings annually, who are left to fend for themselves soon after. With an estimated population of only 3.4 million, manatees face threats from crocodiles, humans, and larger fish. Due to the high value of their ivory, they are endangered. Conservation efforts include fines for poaching and rehabilitation programs in zoos.
