  4. Writing to Argue The purpose of this style of writing is to present both sides of an argument. You present your own point of view, but must acknowledge the other side of the argument too.

  5. There are some things you need to remember: Alliterationthe silly sausage sat softly on the sofa.Facts and figures 9/10 pupils think lunch is too short.Opinions I think that celebrities deserve a private life too.Rhetorical questions Are footballers more valuable to society than doctors? Examples and evidence Last year students lost 3 weeks of their free time to homework.Statistics 89% of footballers admit to having taken steroids.Triples Celebrities are shallow, vain and arrogant. You must use all these devices in your writing as it will keep your work varied and interesting. Think about it: no one’s going to listen to you if you’re boring!

  7. Your introduction Begin with a statement in which you make your point of view clear. For example... Fireworks are dangerous and should not be on sale to the general public. or Although fireworks can be dangerous members of the public should still be able to buy them. Develop your paragraph by giving one clear reason to support your point of view.

  8. The main part Write at least two more paragraphs in support of your argument. Start each new paragraph with a fresh point and back up your views with evidence such as facts, figures and quotations. Next write a paragraph which introduces a counter argument. You might begin this paragraph like this: Some people might argue that .... Then argue against this point : However, ............ If you can think of any other counter arguments, introduce them in the same way and then argue against them.

  10. Your conclusion Write a final paragraph in which you summarise your points and again make your overall point of view clear to the reader. Use one of these phrases to begin your final paragraph: • To sum up... • In conclusion..... • Overall.......
