Musicians have faced challenges with traditional sheet music for over 750 years, particularly the need to turn pages without disrupting their performance. Our project addresses this crucial issue by designing a device that ensures smooth transitions between pages. Through extensive research, surveys, and testing, we have identified key frustrations among musicians, particularly inexperienced players and students. Our prototype utilizes magnetic tabs to improve efficiency while keeping costs low. Although it does not automatically flip pages, our solution provides a smoother experience, making it an essential tool for musicians.

Problem Statement • Musicians have been reading sheet music for over 750 years. While a musician is playing to the end of a page of sheet music, the next page must be immediately available. Having to stop playing, in order to turn a page, is disruptive to the flow of songs globally. On online music forums such as music.stackexchange.com, musicians voice opinions such as “When playing the piano, I sometimes struggle to turn the pages of my music without noticeable sacrificing the sound of the piece or making the book/sheet fall”.
Statement of Purpose • Design a device to smoothly turn the pages of a stack or book of sheet music.
Justification • How big of a problem is this? • Disrupts the flow of the music • Difficult to turn pages • Causes frustration (continually flipping sheet music) • Sheet music can fall
Research • Validate problem • Does it exist? • Multiple evidence • Forum • Interview • Patents • Many patents to solve this problem • Not effective • Many not created or pursued
Research • Previous solution • PageFlipLite • IPAD Bluetooth controlled • Few use • Not advertised • Airturn • Too expensive • Automatically flip sheet music via pedal
Previous Solutions • Researched previous solutions • Designs • How solutions work • Problems • Pricing
Contact Professionals • Sent e-mails to skilled professionals • Music store owners • Orchestra directors • Asked questions about problem • Paper sheet music > Electronic sheet music • Justify problem
Market Research • Target Audience • Musicians, preferably inexperienced (less than 5 years) • High school students • People who have a problem with flipping sheet music
Performance Benchmark • Design is able to flip a page within the length of time of one line of the music currently being played • Design has an efficiency near 100% • Design can flip pages forward and backward • Design is silent and undisruptive during use
Design Criteria • Design specifications • Determine how prototype will work • Automatic • Hand-powered • Decision matrix between possible solutions
Survey • Preliminary questions • Develop survey • Administer survey • Collect data • Analyze data and draw conclusions
Survey results • Low price • More than 50% of musicians find flipping sheet music a problem (sample size 120) • Not advertised • Unaware of existing solutions
Design • Scroll system • effective • automatic • expensive • Sheet music magnetic modification • cheap • Not as effective • Easy to operate
CAD Drawings • Scroll System • Magnetic Modification
Final Prototype • Magnetic Sheet music • The user has to stop the flow of the music momentarily to flip to the next sheet • Smooth, quick transition • Magnets usually don’t lose attraction over time
Overall Results • Positive • The results went as planned • Consistent • However, the prototype is not automatic
Refinements • Change size of magnetic tabs • Initially, the magnets were going to go across the entire page • Problem with weight distribution • Currently, magnetic tabs on both sides
Conclusion • Flipping sheet music is a big problem • Many solutions that fix this problem, but most are expensive ($50+) • Unaware of products • While the magnetic tab sheet music do not automatically flip the sheets, the process does become smoother
