GISP Principles of IAS Prevention • Prevention is better than a cure. • Intentional introductions should be based on risk analysis. • Unintentional introductions should be minimized. • Pathway management, preclearance, inspection of high risk cargo • Adopt the Precautionary Principle. • Every alien species must be considered guilty until proven innocent. • Take steps to minimize spread of IAS between and within countries. • Take steps to protect conservation areas from IAS. • Zero risk for IAS introduction is unrealistic. • Take steps to minimize introduction and spread of IAS. • International Cooperation is vital to prevent spread of IAS. • Public Awareness and Participation is critical in addressing IAS. • Provide authority and support for IAS Prevention. • Legislation, Effective policies, and resources (people, infrastructure, and funding).
