  1. Chemical Reactions By Chelsea Proulx

  2. What is a chemical reaction & why do they take place? A chemical reaction is a process in which one or more substances are changed into others and when atoms of the same or different elements rearrange themselves to form a new substance. They take place because atoms want to gain enough electrons in order to achieve a complete valence shell.

  3. What is a chemical equation & why do we use them? A chemical equation is a shorthand that scientists use to describe a chemical reaction. We use chemical equations because they are a fast and easy way to explain and show a chemical reaction. 2H2 + O2 2H2O

  4. Should chemical equations be balanced? Yes! The law of the conservation of mass states that mass is neither created nor destroyed in a chemical reaction. This shows that the same amount of atoms that you started with should still be present in the new substance that is created.

  5. What are reactants and products? Reactants are the substances that you start with before a chemical reaction. A product is the substance formed by the reactants you combined. 2H2 + O2 2H2O Reactants Products The arrow shows that a chemical reaction has taken place.

  6. What is a synthesis reaction? A synthesis reaction always starts with two simple substances to form a more complex one. A synthesis reaction is when two or more substances are combined and a compound results. A+B AB A way to remember the equation: Example of a synthesis equation: 2H2 + O2 2H2O Hungry bird + Worm = Full bird

  7. What is a decomposition reaction? A decomposition reaction is the opposite of a synthesis reaction. A complex substance is broken up into two or more simple substances. AB A + B A way to remember the equation: Example of a decomposition equation: 2H2O 2H2 + O2 Egg (with turtle inside) = Egg shell + turtle

  8. What is a single replacement reaction? A single replacement reaction is when a single uncombined element replaces another in a compound. A way to remember a single replacement equation: A + BC AC + B An example of a single replacement equation: Guy + Other Guy & Girl = Guy & Girl + Other Guy (now without Girl)

  9. What is a double displacement reaction? A double displacement reaction is when Two Parts of two compounds switch places to form two new compounds. A way to remember the equation: Man with a black hat + Man with a white hat = Man now with a white hat + Man now with a black hat AB + CD AD + CB Example of a double displacement equation:
