El NIÑO. The trade winds push water East to West. This creates an ocean current. The trade winds push the storms and hurricanes to the West. The trade winds cool the water at the surface. As the trade winds push the water towards the West it actually causes the water to “pile up” in the west.

  2. The trade winds push water East to West. This creates an ocean current. The trade winds push the storms and hurricanes to the West. The trade winds cool the water at the surface. As the trade winds push the water towards the West it actually causes the water to “pile up” in the west.

  3. The trade winds have weakened or stopped! Because the trade winds are weak, the water at the surface warms up. The sea begins to flatten out dropping in the West and rising in the East. The water that was “piling up” in the West sloshes back to the East. The more the water warms the more it causes the trade winds to weaken. The air above the ocean becomes more warm and moist. This causes storms to move East.
