  1. 1984 ~ Journals

  2. Journal • Schools prior to the 1960s used to be very totalitarian. Principals and superintendents could suspend you on the spot if your hair were too long, if your skirt were too short, or if you looked at them the wrong way. • For better or worse, this began to change in the late 1960s when the Supreme Court ruled that students had the same civil rights as everyone else. Since that time, however, discipline has become a huge problem in schools, and some people blame the breakdown on the courts’ decision. Some studies even show that students are less educated today than they were prior to the 1960s, many lacking the basic skills necessary for success after high school. • Starting with incoming classes how can we make changes to bring back the importance education, respect in schools and society today? Do you see these things as problems? Explain.

  3. Journal • Orwell states that “Who controls the past, controls the future; who controls the present, controls the past.” Do you believe in our era, it is possible for the government or a single entity to have such control? If so, give examples of how this might be accomplished, or when it may have already happened. If not, explain why.

  4. Journal • Some say that without language, complex thoughts are impossible.  That’s the notion behind Newspeak.  Do you think there are things that exist which we don’t understand because we lack the language to describe it?  Try to explain.  How could this be true?

  5. Journal • Some people claim that to know true love, a person must have the experience of age. Others claim that youth know true love better because they have not been hardened or hurt as the result of time. Have you ever been in love? What is it that attracts you to another person? What is it that turns you away? • How do you predict the relationship between Winston and Julia will work out?

  6. Journal • Despite a growing population in the US, fewer marriages are occurring each year. Meanwhile, the divorce rate continues to increase. What is your view on marriage? Do you want to get married? When? Why? Do you think divorce is hurting the family unit, or is it an important option for failing marriages?

  7. Journal • People of all eras have at one point or another referred to “The good old days.” If you could go back in time and live in any era, when and where would it be? Why?

  8. Journal • Why do you think problems like poverty, war, and hunger exist in the world? Why must people suffer? Is it a requirement that people suffer in life? Explain.

  9. Journal April 9, 2013 • Orwell states, “the proles are human, we are not.” What does he mean? What does it take to be “human” in your opinion?

  10. Journal 3-27-12 • Winston and Julia have found a secret room to rendezvous. What benefits & problems do you see occurring with this room?

  11. Journal 4-19-13 • Do you think it is possible for Winston and Julia to survive their current situation? Explain a time when you were in a sticky situation and would have done anything to get out of it. What would you have done?

  12. Journal 4-9-12 • Predict what you think the outcome for Julia and Winston is……..

  13. Journal 4-22-13 • In today’s society, that of the 21st century, what conditions exist which contain the potential for great negative developments in the future, either through abuse, exploitation, corruption, or otherwise.

  14. Journal 4-11-12 • How would you describe your political beliefs? Democratic, republican, independent, apolitical, something else? Explain what you believe are some duties of the government and why you feel that way.

  15. Journal 4-16-12 • What is the significance of the scene with Parsons?

  16. Journal 4-23-13 • Why is it so important to O’Brien that Winston see five fingers when there are only four?

  17. Journal • What is your reaction to Winston renouncing Julia? How do you think you would have reacted if put through the torturous conditions that Winston faced?

  18. Journal – 4-19-12 • What could be in the dreaded ROOM 101?

  19. Journal • What does the last paragraph mean? What has happened? • Write your reaction to the book.
