  2. Definition • Video on demand (VOD) is an interactive TV technology that allows subscribers to view programming in real time or download programs and view them later, the service is usually delivered over the internet to home computers, portable computers, cellular phones and advanced digital media device. • Video-on-Demand, a term for a wide set of technologies and companies whose common goal is to enable individuals to select videos from a central server for viewing on a television or computer screen. • Web-based video-on-demand is increasing and has is beginning to change from delivery to the PC to the TV as well with services such as Amazon's Video on Demand, VUDU and Netflix. Depending on the service, movies may be streamed to the TV or downloaded for future viewing.

What is it used for? • VOD can be used for entertainment purposes such as ordering movies that are transmitted digitally, Other reasons may be because of educational purposes such as viewing training videos for example and also video conferencing, this can be used for presentations while using video clips. Video on demand is one of the dynamic features offered by Internet Protocol TV. VOD provides users with a menu of available videos from which to choose. The video data is transmitted via Real-Time Streaming Protocol.

  4. Example of VOD’s available service • Examples of VOD would include; IPTV • Music on demand • nPVR • Triple play • Vodcast • Hulu • Clicker.com • SeeSaw • BlinkBox • YouTube • Sky Anytime+ • Netflix

  5. Impacts on people’s lives • VOD has made a huge impact on people’s lives, sites such as YouTube this has been beneficial not just for entertainment purposes but for educational purposes also. • If video on demand increases within the next few years, chances are that television will decline significantly by 2015 as VOD becomes massively more popular.

  6. Advantages and disadvantages Advantages-Relatively cheap compared to fiber optic cable, Video files are large, so downloading the entire file takes time. Streaming video allows the end-user to start viewing the video quickly, sometimes within a few seconds. This benefits both the end-user and the host site. The end-user can decide whether they wish to view the entire video, without having to wait for a long download before they can decide. For the host site, the quick start tends to keep end-users on the site , increasing the chances that the user will click on a related link or an advertisement. Disadvantages- Bandwidth availability is a key problem in the delivery of streaming video. If the sender overestimates or underestimates the available bandwidth, the video quality will suffer. Errors in bandwidth estimation lead to loss of packet or delays in packet delivery, which can cause degraded video quality or jerky video playback. Methods, such as buffering, can limit these problems but there is no solution to completely remove them.
