  1. WELCOME! Alisa Ann Ruch Burn Foundation BURN PREVENTION OVERVIEW

Organizational History and Mission • Mission of the Alisa Ann Ruch Burn Foundation is to enhance the lives of burn survivors and promote burn prevention education. • At age 8, Alisa Ann Ruch was fatally injured in a backyard barbeque accident. Bravely using their tragedy as a catalyst for change, Alisa Ann’s parents partnered with Southern California firefighters to found the Alisa Ann Ruch Burn Foundation (AARBF), a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization, in 1971.

UNDERSTANDING BURN INURIES • 1st Degree: affects the first layer of the epidermis or skin. • 2nd Degree: affects through the dermis or second layer of skin. • 3rd Degree: burns into fatty tissue which affects hair follicles, sweat glands, oil glands and nerve endings. • Burns heal from the inside out so the deeper the burn the longer it will take to heal

AN OVERVIEW ONTHIRD DEGREE BURNS • Skin burned to a third degree cannot heal on its own. • Bodies remain in trauma mode as long as the dead flesh remains on the body. • Removing the dead flesh allows the body to move into recovery mode. • Recovery requires 10,000 protein calories/day. • 20% more energy to survive than any other kind of injury.

  6. PREVENTION PROGRAMS MISSION To support burn prevention efforts in schools, fire departments, and hospitals throughout California and to teach Stop Drop & Roll and Cool-A-Burn prevention methods.

  7. FIREFIGHTER IN SAFETY EDUCATION (FISE) Program • Teaches Stop Drop & Roll, Cool-A-Burn, Crawl Low & Go, planning home escape routes, and Tools vs. Toys. • Currently serving 7 communities throughout California. FIREFIGHTER DEMOSTRATING HUG-A-FIREFIGHTER.

PROTECT YOUR CHILD – SCALD PREVENTION • Infant Scald Program • Developed information packet for parents • Contains an information board for parents to communicate safety information to caregivers and reusable stickers to mark hot objects • The PYC program also includes a caregiver safety curriculum for parenting classes

JUVENILE FIRESETTER INTERVENTION EDUCATION & TRAININGS • 50% of all arson fires are set by juveniles. • Without proper intervention 84% of juvenile firesetters will set another fire. • 1 and 2 day trainings offered for firefighters and behavioral health care professionals and law enforcement officials. • Provides methods for successfully identifying problems causing juvenile firesetting and preventing further incidents.

Fire F.R.I.E.N.D.S – JUVENILE FIRESETTER INTERVENTION PROGRAM • Firesetter Regional Intervention Education Network and Delivery System Fire. • Identifies, categories, and refers juvenile firesetters for intervention. • Collects all information concerning the firesetter and incidents in a confidential database. • Juvenile firesetter refers to any child 18 & under starting or setting fires.

HOW CAN I HELP AARBF’SBURN PREVENTION PROGRAMS? • Volunteer participate in a burn prevention program program by contacting your local regional office. • Donate funds or in-kind materials earmarked for a burn prevention program. • Host a fundraiser to support the work of AARBF. • Refer a family member or friend who might need AARBF’s services or be interesting is supporting the mission.
