Transforming Public Libraries: The People's Network and ICT Learning Centres

The People's Network initiative aims to connect over 4,300 public libraries to the information superhighway by 2002, fostering a modern learning environment through ICT learning centres. With significant funding, including £100m for hardware and £20m for staff training, this initiative will create over 30,000 public access terminals. Beyond NOF funding • Develop the People's Network as a virtual library which: • ensures the transition of the public library into the 21st century - delivering that public "third space" online, accessible from the channel of choice, 24 hours a day • Widens the library-based resources of the People's Network to be relevant to museums and archives • underpins the long-term sustainability of the People’s Network in England

  3. Three year plan? • Year 1: consultation, action research, pilot demonstration • Year 2: Service development, implementation and scalability • Year 3: Management framework and sustainable development • Plus: evaluation, techie stuff, policy dev.
