  9. Wild and Cultivated Plants Wildflowers and plants provide seeds, nuts, and fruit for wild animals; prevent soil erosion; and color the landscape. The plants survive and grow when insects carry pollen from oneplant to another or when animals and the wind spread seeds. Cultivated plants are those that people grow in a specific place or for a specific purpose. People prepare the land, plant the seeds, and make sure the seeds have enough water and fertilizer to grow.

  13. Common and Proper Nouns • A common noun names any person, place, or thing. • A proper noun names a particular person, place, or thing. • Proper nouns begin with capital letters. In proper nouns of more than one word, the first word and each important word are capitalized. The names of days, months, and holidays are proper nouns.

  14. Test Tip • Watch out for proper nounsof more than one word. Thefirst word and each importantword should be capitalized. • No: The band played on Independence day. • Yes: The band played on Independence Day.

  16. Dividing Words into Syllables • The vowel sound in the first syllable of a word can be a clue as to how the word is divided. • Words with a long vowel sound inthe first syllable should be dividedafter the vowel. • Words with a short vowel sound should be divided after the consonant.
