  2. Malcolm Little • May 19, 1925 – February 21, 1965 • Born in Omaha, Nebraska • Had no parental models • Intelligent and articulate speaker, brought him into the Nation of Islam

  3. New York • At 16, he moved to NYC working on the New York to Boston train route • Moved from Boston to NYC (and vice-versa) several times • Later goy the nick-name “Detroit Red” for illegal activity • Arrested in Boston for Larceny • Spent 10 years in prison

  4. The “X” • Many people considered their last names to be a slave names • Exiting prison, he changed it from “Little” • Chose the surname “X” • signifies a lost tribal name

  5. Philosophy

  6. Major Accomplishments • Civil Rights leader • Founded the Organization of Afro-American Unity (OAAU) • Known for public speaking • Last speech: Barnard College, Columbia University • Major point; there was more at stake than just “where to sit”

  7. Final Stand • Assassinated at Manhattan's Audubon Ballrooms • Murdered by three men: Talmadge Hayer, Norman Butler, and Thomas Johnson • Pronounced dead at New York's Columbia Presbyterian Hospital upon arrival
