Story Elements. What is a Plot?. . It is the series of events in the story. It tells the sequence of events . What is Setting?. Time and place that the story took place. You may not know the exact time and place but you can infer from the story. Tells the WHERE and WHEN. Setting.

  2. What is a Plot? . • It is the series of events in the story. • It tells the sequence of events.

  3. What is Setting? • Time and place that the story took place. • You may not know the exact time and place but you can infer from the story. Tells the WHERE and WHEN

  4. Setting • When? • Where? On a beautiful, sunny morning, King Mufasa and Sarabi had a beautiful boy cub who would be the Prince of Pride Rock. • When might this take place? • Where is it taking place? • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HwSKkKrUzUk

  5. What are Characters? • Who the story is about • There are 2 types of characters • MAJOR---most important, who the story is about • MINOR---not as important, but they are in the story

  6. Characters • Who? • Main Characters • Minor Characters Rafiki, an adviser to the royal family, blessed the young prince and named him Simba. • Who might the main character be? Who is the minor character?

  7. Exposition • The beginning of the story where the reader meets the characters and finds out the setting • The reader is given background information on the story

  8. Initiating Event • An event that causes something else to occur

  9. What is Rising Action? • The events that lead up to the most exciting part of the story. • The conflicts that get in the way of the main character

  10. What is Conflict? • The problem that the main character has with another character, setting or himself. • There are 2 types of conflicts • EXTERNAL—problem with another character or the setting • INTERNAL---problem that the character has with himself/herself.

  11. Conflict Simba had an evil Uncle Scar who believed he had the right to be King. He befriended the hyenas to devise a plot to overthrow his brother and Simba’s father, King Mufasa. • What type of conflict is represented? External or Internal?   13. Conflict • After, Simba spends a long time away from Pride Rock. He knows he is disappointing his deceased father, but feels he would not be able to take over Pride Rock. • What type of conflict is represented? External or Internal? What is the Conflict?

  15. Turning Pointfor both conflicts The point in the story where the entire plot changes course. One evening, as Nala scavenged for food, she discovered the young prince.   16. What is a Climax? • This is the most exciting part of the story. • This is the “scary music” part of the story, just like a movie. • At this part of the plot you begin to figure out how the conflict will be solved.

  18. What is Falling Action? • The action or events that follow the climax. • Begins to wind the story down until the end.

  19. What is a Resolution? • The final part of the plot, the problem is solved. • Conflicts are resolved. • Always comes near the end of the story.

  22. Plot Summary • First, Simba was born. • Then, Scar tricked Simba into thinking he killed his father. • Next, Simba ran away. • But, Nala and Rafiki find Simba and make him return. • Finally, Simba overthrows his evil uncle, Scar and becomes King.

  23. Plot Diagram Climax: The turning point. The most intense moment (either mentally or in action). Rising Action: The series of conflicts and crisis in the story that lead to the climax. Falling Action: All of the action which follows the Climax. Exposition: The start of the story. The way things are before the action starts. Resolution: The conclusion, the tying together of all of the threads.
