  1. The Star Filter Is A Packaged System Combining The Dirty Tank, Filter And Clean Tank In One Assembly, Eliminating The Balance Problem Of Multiple Components The Heart Of The System, The Star Element, Is Easily Removed For Inspection And Service The Star Filter Employs A Heavy Duty Dragout Which Provides Complete Removal Of Solids From The System. The Star Filter Is A Hydraulic Vacuum Filter Which Means The Filter / System Pumps Only See Filtered Coolant Resulting In Long Service Life. THE HYDROFLOW STAR FILTER The Cellulose Pre-coat System Is An Automatic And Effective Distribution Method For Adding Filter Aids.

  2. THE STAR ELEMENT The Star Element Provides Maximum Filtration Area In The Most Compact Configuration The Slurry Distribution Ring Provides Accurate And Effective Introduction Of Cellulose Precoat. The Patented Wet Seal Is A Positive Seal That Eliminates Solids By-pass The Element's Star Shape And The Filter Panel's Compact, Rectangular Design Maintain Structural Integrity After Removal From The Filter Stainless Steel Wedgewire Or Patented Fuse-bonded Stainless Steel Microscreen Filter Panels Are Constructed To Meet Specific Customer Requirements

  3. The Filtered Coolant Is Returned Directly to The Machine Tools Dirty Coolant Enters The Rear Of The Filter. An Inlet Baffle Slows The Flow The Star Filter Provides Two Stages Of Filtration- 1st Stage -Heavy Solids Quickly Settle To The Bottom Of The Tank And Are Removed By The Drag Conveyor 2nd Stage Of Filtration -The Star Element Is Connected To The Suction Side Of The Pump And Draws The Fluid Through The Element Trapping Solids On The Surface. THE STAR FILTER OPERATION

  4. So The Tank Remains Full And Over-weirs Back To The Dirty Tank, Allowing For Continuous Recirculation. The Flow Of Coolant Through The Air Ejector Creates A Suction Which Is Used To Draw Any Free Air Out Of The Top Of The Star Element The Clean Tank Is Connected To The Suction Pipe. The Regeneration Valve Is Closed, Another Small Portion Of Filtered Coolant Is Used To Supply The Pressurized Wet Seal THE STAR FILTER OPERATION A Portion Of Filtered Coolant Flows Through An Air Ejector And Up To The Clean / Regeneration Tank.

  5. The Cellulose Is Mixed With Clean Coolant And The Slurry Is Pumped To The Distribution Ring On The Star Element. The Cellulose Is Quickly Drawn To The Microscreen Surface Creating A Filter Cake For Trapping Solids THE STAR FILTER PRECOAT Cellulose Precoat Is Used To Provide A True Depth Cake And Achieve Filtration Below 10 Microns. The powdered cellulose is stored in a hopper that is equipped with an automatic feeder.

  6. THE STAR FILTER FILTRATION Dirty Coolant Enters The Filter And Heavy Solids Settle To The Drag Conveyor The Fines In The Coolant Are Drawn By The Pump To The Star Element And Trapped In The Cellulose Depth Cake

  7. THE STAR FILTER REGENERATION As The Solids Are Trapped In The Cellulose the cake becomes compressed and dense with the weight of the solids. As the Cake builds it restricts the flow and creates a negative pressure in the suction pipe. The system sense the increase in vacuum and initiates the automatic regeneration cycle. 6 2 5 • The following is the sequence of events: • The regeneration valve opens. • Coolant from the raised clean tank flows by gravity and supplies the pumps and additional coolant flows back towards the Star Element. • The backflow of coolant gently releases the compressed filter cake from the element. 3 1 4 7. A Conveyor Drive Runs On An Adjustable Timer, And The Solids Are Allowed To Dry On The Ramp Before Being Dumped Into The Hopper 4. The dense solids mass quickly settles to the conveyor for removal from the system 5. A Pneumatic Cylinder Then Lifts The Element And Bumps It In The Wet Seal To Further Clean The Surface 6. Following The Bump, The Regeneration Valve Closes And The Precoat Cycle Begins

  8. BENEFITS OF THE STAR FILTER • Depth Filtration - Superior Filtration: Hydroflow has been manufacturing roll media filters for over 20 years and we know their limitations, particularly in filtration efficiency. Roll media filters rely on building a cake to achieve effective filtration. Cake building requires a good distribution in the size of solids in the dirty fluid. And even in the best case, with wheel breakdown to aid in the distribution, the filters generally only achieve 10-15 micron. • Filter Area: Flat bed filters offer limited filter area and/or only regenerate a small section of media at a time. This results in high velocity through the media, further limiting the ability to build a cake and resulting in excessive media usage. • Filter By-Pass: Roll media filters are prone to by-pass as the media has a moving seal along the entire length and on both sides of the bed. The media is also subject to tearing or uneven tracking, resulting is gross bypass with no warning or indication of the problem.

  9. STAR FILTER ADVANTAGES VS FLAT BED FILTER STAR FILTER Large Filter Area 2 Stages Of Filtration Depth Filtration Using Cellulose Pressurized Wet Seal –Virtually Eliminates Solids By-Pass Regeneration Of Entire Surface Maintains Low Velocity Element Backwash, No Moving Belt No Vacuum Box Limited Filter Area All Solids Must Be Trapped by Media Surface Filtration On Flat Media Moving Seal-Bypass Is Possible Each Time The Media Moves Incremental Regeneration, High Velocity Through Small Area Moving Belt, Transporting Out Of Filter Vacuum Box Is Difficult To Clean

  10. THE STAR FILTER ADVANTAGES VS STAR FILTER Wedge Wire Drum Filter Large Filter Area Of Star Depth Filtration Using Cellulose, Effective Distribution Of Precoat Pressurized Wet Seal Element Backwash, No Moving Drum Or Scrapping Regeneration Off Entire Surface Maintains Low Velocity No Vacuum Box Limited Filter Area Of Drum Surface Filtration & No Effective Precoat Distribution. Rotating Seal On Drum Rotating Drum, Scrapper Blade Forcing Particulate Into And Through The Wedge Wire. Incremental Regeneration, High Velocity Through Small Area Vacuum Box Is Difficult To Clean

  11. VS STAR FILTER Pressure Precoat Filter Vacuum Filtration Is A Simple System And Eliminates Pumping Dirty Fluid, Complex Valve Sequences And Multiple Components Star Element Is Easily Removed For Inspection And Cleaning Pressurized Wet Seal Packaged System With Integral Dirty Tank And No Large Clean Tanks And Mixing Tanks Simple And Effective Precoat System Pressure Filters Are Complex With Several Pumps, Valves And Components That Must Sequence Precisely For Proper Operation Dome Filters Are Labor Intensive to Service, Tube Bundles Are Easily Damaged And Costly To Replace Dozens Of Individual Seals Between Tube And Diaphragm Plate Multiple Tanks, Interconnecting Piping And Valves, Difficult To Balance Manual Or Complex Precoat System
