History Timeline Education was taught in one room schoolhouses. Classrooms were very small and consisted of one teacher with around 20 students. They had a wood burning stove to heat the building during the cold winters.
1638 - The first printing press in what is now the American Colonies is set up at Harvard College. 1801 - James Pillans invents the blackboard 1867 - The Department of Education is created in order to help states establish effective school systems.
