Biogas Capture and Utilization in Small Municipalities Presentation to CHEMRAWN Queen’s University July 2007 Rodrigo Diaz Versus Goliath Project Solutions Inc. rod@vsgoliath.ca
Versus Goliath Project Solutions “Fighting the giant of climate change” • Versus Goliath develops and operates waste-to-energy projects internationally • Sectors of expertise include: • Landfills • Wastewater treatment facilities • Manure management • Vegetable and animal processing • Bagasse and Vinasse treatment
Our Philosophy • Provide a solution not a product • Be Client Flexible – understand community context • Design for Cost Effective Construction • Design for ease of operations – local technicians • Full Technical Support • Maximize local economic and environmental benefits
Argentina • Two Sites: • Landfill in Tucumán • Wastewater treatment facility in Alta Gracia (outskirts of Córdoba) • Both sites are in northern Argentina
Tucumán Landfill • Serves a population of ~1,000,000 • Approximately 500-700 tonnes per day incoming waste • Currently operating outside design intentions • Limited space for leachate treatment
Tucumán Landfill • Bioreactor landfills operate as controlled bioreactors, where waste degradation could be greatly enhanced • Advantages: • Enhance biodegradation of solid waste • Increase rate of methane generation • Rapid reduction of contaminant life span • Rapid recovery of landfill air space
Bioreactor Landfills Liquids Storage Gas Collection to Generate Energy GroundwaterMonitoring
Tucumán Landfill • VsGoliath initiatives: • Optimize bioreactor landfill • Improve methane generation and collection systems • Design electricity and heat recovery systems • Ensure expansions comply with environmental normativity
Alta Gracia Wastewater Facility • Serves ~45,000 people • History of ineffective treatment and high odours • Local cooperative entrusted with treatment of municipal wastewater • Inadequate financial resources for upgrades
Alta Gracia Wastewater Facility • Existing facilities: • 4 treatment lagoons: 2 anaerobic, 2 aerobic • Experimental contactor plates • Abandond phitoremediation pond
Alta Gracia Wastewater Facility • VsGoliath initiatives: • Establish appropriate treatment train • Improve operation of anaerobic lagoons • Design methane collection system • Improve quality of effluent at the exit of the aerobic lagoons • Resucitate phitoremediation ‘polishing’ pond
GHG Abatement Potential • Alta Gracia (Wastewater Plant) • 56 Tonnes CH4/year; 1,170 CO2 eq. • Tucumán (Landfill) • Avg. 650 Tonnes CH4/y; 13,800 CO2 eq.
The Business Model Versus Goliath: • Designs and installs waste-to-energy system • Quantifies the GHG capture and destruction according to regime guidelines (Kyoto, ISO, etc.) • Completes the project certification process Revenue: • emission reduction credits • sale of electricity
