Addressing FGM at Worple Primary Background The challenge The team The approach The outcome Background: area of mixed housing catchment area is mainly 2 and 3 bedroom private housing but 75% of pupils come from large LA estates which are mixed high and low rise flats and houses. Lower percentage of pupils of ethnic minority that the borough average at about 50%overall. About 30% Muslim and 10% Somali. The Challenge: Area Child Protection conference 2005 and LA CP meetings Families and specific chn in school who fitted description Huge fallout at school that had raised issue with an individual family The team: LA safeguarding officer; Met Police; mum/GP/gynaecologist; Somali language support assistant; Somali Learning Mentor Approach: general presentation on the role of social services as a supportive agency using video in Somali leading to a discussion of tFGM specifically Outcome: Need for a forum to discuss general health issues among this community; de-mystified the role of Social Services; concern expressed of young men from this turning to drugs On FGM specifically, widely held belief that this is not an issue for our local community, but there might still be pressure form older generation at home.
