Does the county and state do enough to make the citizens aware of recycling outlets? Courtney Barefoot Mentor: Stacey Beard Teacher: Nan Danehower
Why I Chose Recycling • At the School • During high school football games and events I realized that every night hundreds of bottles and cans were being thrown away. • I felt that this was something that desperately needed to be changed. • Around the Town • Many Neighborhoods and town businesses had no recycling bins. • For a town that was being praised for their new recycling programs we were not doing very good.
Research • Topic • Does the county and state do enough to make the citizens aware of recycling outlets? • I do not believe that the government does enough to let the public know of the proper recycling habits. • Why? • Since I was young I have cared a lot about the environment and the humans affect on it. I wanted to know with this project I was making a difference in our community for the better.
Research • Facts • On average an American produces 4.5lbs of waste a day. • 80% of what Americans throw away is recyclable, but our recycling rate is only 28%. • In North Carolina every 3.9 seconds enough plastic bottles are thrown away to reach the height of Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. • In North Carolina it is illegal to throw away plastic bottles, aluminum cans, oyster shells, and even motor vehicle oil filters.
Why Should We Improve It? • Helps Economy • Recycling creates three times the revenue as a landfill and six times the amount of jobs. • Saves cities money because less energy is used to make a good from recycled products rather than virgin products. • Helps Environment • Sixty million tons of waste are saved annually. • One ton of recycled paper saves seven thousand gallons of water.
How Could We Improve It? • Inform • If more citizens new the affects of recycling on the future generations they would be more willing to recycle. • The people are also unaware of what they can and cannot recycle and how they should go about doing so. Information needs to be provided to them. • Supply • More recycling bins within the community so people are more influenced to recycle. • Recycling bins in every neighborhood so the people have a place to go without question.
Research Obstacles • Statistics • While writing my paper many numbers and percent's were included in my research. I found it hard to decided which of the information was correct. • Reliability • As with any paper I had to make sure that I only got the best information and the most accurate. This is difficult when I was working with such a pressing issue.
Research Successes • Collecting Information • Being such a hot topic in todays society there was a lot of information and I was easily able to gather what I needed to from it all. • Interview • For my interview I chose Lauren Ramsey the head of the recycling club at Clayton High. She was able to provide me with ample information that I otherwise might now of been able to get.
What I Learned About Myself • While completing this project I was able to stay on task and accomplish what I needed to in a timely manner. • I knew that the more efficiently I worked the better because I would have been more prepared in the end. • My organization and leadership skills are much more developed than I previously thought. • This project required much time and management and I learned that when it was time for me to step up to the plate I was able to handle it quite well. • Worthwhile? • I do believe that this project has been worthwhile it has helped me learn about my organization and planning skills. It has also prepared me for my future and soon to be college life.
Influence On My Future • I will be attending Meredith College in the spring semester 2013. There I plan to major in business and minor in interoior design and fashion marketing. From there I plan on perusing a life as an event coordinator. • My project has helped me confirm that I am organized and I have well time management skills and a good work ethic. All of these things will be required of me if I plan on staying on the path as a event coordinator. • I also learned that I do not want to be apart of the school system. Before now it was a possibility. • My entire project I struggled to have anyone respond to me or provide me information about the recycling in the schools. This helped me confirm that I did not want to be apart of the school system.
