  4. The White Tower It's a cylidrical stone tower monument. It was built by the Ottomans at the 15thcentury to help defend the city's harbour. Many people died there. That is why its name was "The tower of blood”. It became white after 1912 when Greece gained control of the city after 500 years of Ottoman rule.Today it is a museum.

  5. ARCH OF GALERIOUS AND THE ROTUNDA These two structures were built in 303 B.C to honour the victory or Roman Emperor Galerius Maximilianus over Persians.

  6. Over the years, the Rotunda, which was built as the Roman Pantheon, was changed from a polytheist temple to a muslim mosque and later a christian church(St George). The mosque has been preserved and some ancient stones. Now the structure is used as a museum. The ROTUNDA

  7. St. Demetrius, our patron Saint Saint Demetrius was a general of the Roman army and being a Christian, he was martyred during the persecutions of Diocletian and Galerius in 303 AD. Twenty years after his death, in 323, Christianity was recognized as one of the religions of the Roman Empire. In that year the Christians built a small church on the site of the Saint's martyrdom. One century later a larger church was built there. Unfortunately this church was destroyed by fire in 1917. That was the time when the underground crypt was discovered, where the Saint had been jailed and martyred in the Roman baths.

  8. St. Demetrius’ church • Today's church was inaugurated in 1958. It is a large rectangular basilica divided into five aisles. The church possesses some beautiful 7th century mosaics and frescos which survived from the fire and still decorate the surfaces of some walls. • Saint Demetrius Day is celebrated on October 26th. It is a great holiday as the entire city celebrates its Patron Saint. There is a ceremonial procession of the holy icon on the previous day. The public, civil authorities and bands accompany the icon through the streets of the city.
