What is mental illness? • A general term that refers to a group of illnesses • A mental illness is a health problem that significantly affects how a person feels, thinks, behaves, and interacts • It is diagnosed according to standardised criteria. • The term mental disorder is also used to refer to these health problems. • Caused by physical dysfunction in brain

Nature of Mental Health problems • 1 in 5 Australians will experience a mental health problem in their life • Episodes can come and go. • Experiences vary from full recovery to reoccurrence • Most can be treated effectively • According to the World Health Organization, depression will be one of the biggest health problems worldwide by the year 2020.

  4. Nature continued • People often suffer a great deal • They and their families have to cope with an illness that can radically alter their life • People with a mental illness often experience discrimination and rejection

Categories ( types) Psychotic & Non Psychotic Psychotic • Affect brain • Cause change in thinking, emotions and behaviour • Lose touch with reality • Hard to make sense of things • Experience delusions and hallucinations • Eg Schizophrenia and Bipolar mood disorder • Effective medication can be used to support

Categories ( types) Non Psychotic • Strong feelings of depression, sadness, tension or fear that can cause difficulty coping with day to day activities and maintaining relationships. • Symptoms may not be evident to others • Cause personal distress • Examples include: some forms of depression, eating disorders and anxiety disorders. • Treated effectively with medication and therapy

Things to understand • It is not a form of disability or brain damage • It is an illness like asthma, heart disease or diabetes • They are not incurable • Any one can develop a mental illness • When people don’t understand, when they have negative attitudes or reinforce negative stereotypes it results in isolation, discrimination and stigma

  8. Supporting Mental health • Positive and hopeful attitudes toward people with mental illness are critical to ensuring quality of life for people with mental illness and supporting recovery.

What can be doneabout the stigma ofmental illness? • Think about mental illnesses like any other illness • Talk about mental illness openly with everyone you meet • Educate the community to overcome negative stereotypes • Address discrimination in every day life • Avoid using negative language
