How to create a Great Headline • To save space, headlines are rarely a complete sentence. • Little connecting words are often dropped: a, the, an…. • Man Killed in Accident • Boy, Tommy, Named Hero • Q: What else did you notice about these headlines? • A: All of the important words are capitalized.

  2. Noun Phrases • sentence fragment consisting of words that describe a noun at the end. • Under Pressure from Boss • Unexpected Visit • Overwhelming Response of Voters • These phrases get the point across while saving space.

  3. Noun Strings • No verbs, just nouns. • Widow Pension Pay Committee • Landscaping Company Disturbance Regulations • Mustang Referral Customer Complaint • (There is a complaint made by a customer about a referral program for Mustang cars)

  4. Using the Present Tense • Even if you are writing about something that has already happened. This makes your headline very immediate, very "now." • Forgotten Brother Appears • Professors Protest Pay Cuts

  5. Very Punny • Some headlines will use a pun, or play on words • About Prince Fielder hitting the most home runs.....Prince is King • About Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck winning a big game.....Lucky Stars

  6. In the Future • If writing about something that will soon happen, it is easiest to use the infinitive, or "to" form • Mayor to Open Shopping Mall • Brad Pitt to visit Milwaukee

  7. Creating a Headline • A paper company will be going out of business because of dropping sales. • --Paper Company to Fold • Call of Duty being named the most popular video game of the year. • --Many Called to Duty
