This paper explores the critical properties of effective digital watermarks, emphasizing the importance of invisibility, or perceptual transparency, in watermarking techniques. It outlines the general scenario for message hiding and identifies desirable characteristics of digital watermarks. Additionally, we categorize various watermarking applications by examining existing literature that combines perceptual coding with watermarking. By analyzing one specific paper in detail, the advantages and limitations of different approaches are discussed, providing insights into the integration of these technologies for improved digital content protection.

"Integrating Perceptual Coding with Watermarking" Abstract There are a number of important properties that a watermark should exhibit. In many watermarking techniques the invisibility (perceptual transparency) is based on human visual/audio system. In this paper, I first outline the general scenario for message hiding and the desirable characteristics of digital watermarks. Then form a small number of watermarking application categories based on the several papers that have dealt with combining perceptual coding with watermarking and briefly discuss their advantage and limitation and analyse one paper from these categories in more details.
