  1. Project 09454: Sponsor: Design and Testing of Turbomachinery Components Project Background: The project will build off of a centrifugal pump system test stand developed under MSD project P08453. The test stand is used for Particle Imaging Velocimetry (PIV) research at RIT Team Members: Mission Statement: The primary objective of this project is to design, manufacture and integrate several Impellers and Diffusersinto the existing pump to enable the characterization of a variety of flows. • Key Uses: • Tool to facilitate Particle Imaging velocimetry (PIV) research at RIT • Teaching tool for Undergraduate Turbomachinery Coursework and Labs L to R: Ammar Jangbarwala (ME), Rishitha Dias (IE), Reme Meck (ME), Kevin Klucher (ME), John Hayles (ME), Dr. S. Day (Faculty Guide) System Level Design: • Key Customer Requirements: • Must simulate and characterize a variety of unique flows thought the pump system. • The turbomachinery components must be interchangeable to ensure reparability and upgradability • The component swap out procedures must be intuitive and quick (<5 min) • The system must be capable of measuring and controlling variable of interest (Pressure, Flow, etc.) • GUI to control/measure variables via computer Final Impeller & Diffuser Designs: P09454-102 P09454-103 P09454-104 Design Parameters: To demonstrate effective turbomachinery design parameters, the impeller geometric properties were varied according to known equations regulating flow through a centrifugal pump.  The vortex effect was minimized, along with the cavitation, to boost performance to higher levels than the previous benchmark of straight-bladed impeller performance.  Specific Speed is used to determine the type of centrifugal pump needed for a certain fluid systems required flow (Q) and system head (H) needed to overcome. Pump head and flow are determined by impeller size and geometry. The flow is a resultant of Diameter, Rotational Speed, Blade Height and flow coefficient. The flow coefficient is determined graphically using the type of blade shape and the blade inlet and exit angle. P09454-105 P09454-106 P09454-203 (Vane) P09454-201 Flat Plate System Head Equation Specific Speed Equation Specific Speed Equation Results: Flow Test Results: Results Summary: • Characterizes 10x more flows (5 impellers x 2 diffusers) than previous system • 65% Faster component change-out time • 60% Increase in head over P08453 pump • 25% Increase in flow compared to P08453 • 27% Increase for the basic 102 impeller due to Vaned Diffuser Design • Pressure, Flow and Motor RPM can be measured & controlled remotely via GUI
