    3. Information System Security/2005 3 What is security? Prevention: take measures that prevent your assets from being damaged. Detection: take measures so that you can detect when, how, and by whom an asset has been damaged. Reaction: take measures so that you can recover your assets or to recover from a damage to your assets

    4. Information System Security/2005 4 Examples Ex. 1 - Private property Prevention: locks at doors, window bars, walls around the property. Detection: stolen items arent there any more, burglar alarms, CCTV, Reaction: call the police, Ex. 2 - eCommerce Prevention: encrypt your orders, rely on the merchant to perform checks on the caller, Detection: an unauthorized transaction appears on your credit card statement Reaction: complain, ask for a new credit card number,

    5. Information System Security/2005 5 Why Information System Security? Lets imagine first a computer-free office, where everything is done by telephone and paperwork. What are the basic security processes in the physical world that help us to make security decisions about information that we receive? Lock and key Control access to materials Safe transmission Administrative security Auditing

    6. Information System Security/2005 6 Why Information System Security? Now imagine a modern fully networked office environment. Lets suppose that nobody has implemented any information security controls. How do you know that non else has accessed your data? How do you identify the sender of a file? Can anyone else read an email that you send to a colleague? How do you sign a contract? Is this a more secure environment than the old office?
