  5. What is Linear Kinematics? A description of motion. Using terms like position, speed, Velocity, Acceleration and time.

  6. Making Motion Diagrams • Real world Pictures • Position points • Velocity Vectors • Acceleration direction • Natural Equations from these Drawings.

  7. How do you calculate displacement? • Distance and Displacement are different. • Displacement is a change in position. • Measured by Xf -Xi it also includes a direction reference. • Distance is how far you actually went from Start to finish.

  8. Why is direction so important? • We need a reference or starting point. • I was born 120 miles from Concordia. • Where was I born? • Distance is a scalar quantity • Displacement is a vector quantity. • Swimming pool example.

  9. Position vs. Time graphs • A linear graph means what? • Direct relationship • slope gives you speed • area under curve has no physical meaning. • Check units on graph • What would a parabola mean?

  10. Acceleration means a change in speed or direction. • Inertial Motion comes in two forms • Rest • Constant Velocity • Accelerated motion is a changing motion • this means speed up • this means slow down • this means change your direction

  11. Are we accelerating? • Did we change speed during an interval of time? • Is it a positive acceleration or a negative acceleration? • What equation do we use?

  12. What does an acceleration look like on a v vs. t graph? • Recall a position vs time graph of an acceleration gave a parabola. • The Velocity vs time graph gives a straight line when an acceleration is present.

  13. Predict what type of motions each of these graphs represent.Can you standup and walk to produce such a graph?

  14. What about falling objects?What do data from a falling object look like?

  15. Actual data from a free falling body. • Notice how the position between each flash increases. • Galileo thought this was increased via odd numbers. • Was he right?

  16. Confused, Don’t be confused? • If a rube like Clark can get it, so can somebody like you! • Just ask Jimmy, he knows the best way to make the front page is to know about linear kinematics.

  17. Homework • Review Chapter 1 on Kinematics • Work on the chapter end problems. • Always draw motion diagrams • Always draw pictures and Free body force diagrams • Let the equations fall out from your drawings.
