EARLY LIFE • Born in 1894, in New York City • Grew up in a rough and tough neighborhood • Was super skinny and terrible at sports • Drawing was the only thing he’s good at • Left high school to go to art academies • Loved the work of Howard Pyle, an artist who did realistic paintings of King Arthur or pirates

  3. Influences, Training • Was taught by Thomas Fogarty and George Bridgman at the Art Students League • Attended the National Academy of Design • Clyde Forsythe, a cartoonist and illustrator, urged Rockwell to send a cover illustration to the Saturday Evening Post, at that time a popular weekly magazine

  4. Career Highlights • Rockwell’s first cover on the Saturday Evening Post appeared in 1916, when Norman was 22 years old. It features two boys who are making fun of a third boy because he has to babysit.

  5. FAVORITE PAINTINGS • Rockwell was known for his sense of humor and his paintings represented everyday things • Rockwell used lots of kids in his paintings and was very creative with people’s expressions like in “Boy on High Dive”

  6. OTHER FAVORITES • In “Going and Coming”, you can see how everyone looks excited on the way there, and everyone looks sleepy on the way back

  7. FAVORITE PAINTINGS • I like this painting because it has a lot of detail and it looks like the dog is about to lick the paint

  8. LATER LIFE • Later he lived in Stockbridge, Massachusetts • He soon died in 1978 • He could draw people and objects as well as any other artist and used lots of detail in his paintings
