  3. ~About Kagoshima Operation~ ANA’s Daily Flight Routes Kagoshima ⇔ Tokyo (Haneda) ⇔ Osaka(Itami) ⇔ Nagoya ⇔ Okinawa (Naha) • ANA group operates 50 inbound and outbound flights every day. • 9 airlines operate 166 inbound and outbound flights every day.

  4. ~About Kagoshima Operation~ • The runway direction of Kagoshima airport is 16/34, and ILS facility is equipped in runway 34 side. • Pilot and dispatchers are requested to select appropriate route by using latest information.

  5. ~Volcanic ash avoidance route~ • GODAI arrival is one of major STARs to avoid ash drifting north-east side from Sakura-jima. • Pilot can request desired route based on his judge that a cleared route or a route to be cleared is inappropriate because of volcanic ash etc..

  6. ~Operations near the active volcano~ • “The most important point in the operations with volcanic ash is 『AVOIDANCE』” → Written in Airplane Operations Manual (AOM). • We can not see or detect it in clouds or at night-time. Dispatchers and Pilots use following resources in the operation. • Upper wind (around Sakura-jima) forecast data from JMA. • Company airport report informed by Kagoshima STC. • Explosion detection system in Kagoshima STC. • JMA: Japan Meteorological Agency • STC: Station Control / Operation Office

  7. ~Information flow about Sakura-jima volcano~ Volcanic information Kagoshima weather station Pilot Report Sakurajima INFO ATC ANA Kagoshima STC Other ANA office Captain • Pilots are requested to report ATC or STC, when they find volcanic smoke that affect flight safety. • Kagoshima STC is requested to report to other sections immediately when he get volcanic information from Kagoshima weather station.

  8. ~ Upper wind forecast data from JMA ~ Photo from 10km south-east of Sakura-jima Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism / Osumi river and road office live camera • This forecast data is issued at every 3 hours. • The ash column of Sakurajima reaches about 6,000ft in average, and sometimes exceeds 10,000ft.

  9. ~ Company airport report (Kagoshima STC) ~ COMPANY AIRPORT REPORT: RJFK OBS 0759/11Z SR2016Z/SS1029Z USING RWY : T/O 34   L/D 34  ILS-Z GPS RAIM : 0415Z/0433Z 1. RWY  COND : D R Y 2. APR  COND : INC LM-L.T100 3. FNL  COND : ROUGH AIR  4. SFC  WIND : 34)220/12-15KT TAIL6-8KT                16)240/13-18KT 5. INSIGHT   : 4-3NM       *TEMPO LOW CLD OBS/-SHRA 6. SAKURAJIMA: KAZAN-2(TEMPO EXPLODED)       *IF ASH CLD OBS.DRIFT TO NE       FROM MT.SAKURAJIMA.       TEMPO VA SMELL RPT.      *FROM E: NO PRBLM      *IF EXPLODED, AFT SPICA DCT AMORI S: RCMD VIA HKC 7. WD DATA 0600Z/11       A100:250/41KT   A070:***/**KT        A050:240/30KT   A031:230/25KT 8. FM E: F380-300 LGTM    (0750Z/B3)        S: ALMST S FRM F270 (0236Z/B3) 9. ALL ACFT APU ON BLK IN PLZ!! • This data is input by Kagoshima STC staff whenever they get new information such as weather and ATC conditions. • This data can be got by ACARS. The classification of the ash condition in planning flight by PIREP etc.. • Kazan-1:When flowing smoke, visible smoke. No care for planning. • Kazan-2:When flowing smoke, invisible smoke from cockpit or ground, but no need to avoid route by upper wind. • Kazan-3:When flowing smoke, invisible smoke from cockpit or ground, and expect to avoid route by upper wind.

  10. ~Maintenance Experience~ • More than 30 years of operation in Kagoshima Airport, ANA has not experienced significant damages or problems for both engines and airframes due to volcanic ash from Sakura-jima. • Based on observation by Kagoshima Airport Meteorological Station, falling volcanic ash in Kagoshima airport has been reported for 67 days in 15 years from 1995.07.01 to 2010.06.30. • Unfortunately, actual quantity of falling ash has not been counted. • ANA’s 864 flights were operated (landings and take-offs) in the affected date and time. • Scheduled engine borescope inspections, engine overhauls and airframe inspections proved no significant damages or problems due to volcanic ash fall.

  11. ~Maintenance Experience~ Falling ash date and time for last 15 years

  12. ~Maintenance Experience~ For your reference, Kagoshima local Meteorological Observatory (11 kilomters (7 miles) west from Sakurajima) has monitored quantity of falling ash.

  13. ~Operations near the active volcano~ • ANA strongly believes that • Our operational experiences around Sakura-jima should be considered carefully to establish new guidelines and/or rules in ICAO Task Force. • Study for Sakura-jima is essentialto establish new guidelines and a good opportunity since the volcano is still active and live.
