  3. How does Email work? • A simplified explanation… Sender Recipient 1 3 Internet 2 Service Provider Service Provider

Terms • Sender – the person sending the message • Recipient – the person receiving the message • Internet – a global network of networks • Service Provider – provides software and server space to deliver and receive the message • Web-based – provides addresses to anyone for free as long as you have access to the Internet. Examples: Yahoo!, Gmail, Hotmail etc. • ISP (Internet Service Provider) – provides internet service plus several addresses for a fee. Examples: SBC Global and Comcast

  8. Accessing Email Type in the address or, if you don’t know the address, search for “the name of your service provider + mail” ie. yahoo mail If you are signed on If you need to sign in

  10. Basic Email Terms • New or Compose Create an email message • Check Mail or Inbox Lists the messages sent to you • Drafts Message created but not sent • Sent Lists the messages you sent • Search Mail A way to find an old message

  12. Basic Email Terms To open the message double click or, in other words, press the mouse button twice in rapid sucession

  13. Basic Email Terms • DeleteMessage is sent to Trash • ReplyRespond to a message • Forward Sends a message received to another person

  14. Basic Email Terms • Down/Up Arrows Down Arrow takes you to the previous message Up Arrow takes you to the next message • Spam Allows you to mark a message as spam • Move Allows you to place the message into a folder

  16. Creating a Message • Click New, Reply or Forward to create a message

  18. Creating a Message • Cc: Carbon copy • BCc: Blind Carbon copy • Subject: A descriptive word or few with the gist of the message • Body: The area in which the message is typed • Send: Enables the message to go to the recipient

Attachments • Attach:Allows for a file to be sent • File types•Word processor •Spreadsheets • •PDFs •Audio files • •Image files (jpeg, gif, bmp etc) • Size Limits Attachments being sent or received cannot exceed the maximum limit offered by the service providerie. Yahoo email = 10 MB, Gmail = 25 MB

  23. Attachments • Opening Attachments • Do NOT open or download any files from an unknown sender • You may need to save the file to your computer if it will not open from the message

Caution! • Watch for viruses • Do NOT open a message or links from an unknown sender • Watch the address ie. bankofamerica.scamcompany.com • Protect your Privacy! • ALWAYS log out or sign out of your email account • Remember the Service Provider has access to your account • Do NOT send important information such as account or social security #s through your accountYour bank will NEVER ask you to send private information via email • BE ALERT
