  3. FREEDOM (cont) • Freedom to one thing demands slavery to another. As Christians we enslave and entrust ourselves to Christ who is a benevolent dictator looking out for our interest not His own. In this way we are free from sin and the consequences that come from our directing our own lives. • A wife is NOT the slave of her husband but, as a slave to Christ, fulfills her submissive role because of her submission to Christ (“Likewise, wives be in submission…”) and seeking freedom in Him. • A husband is NOT the master of his wife but, as a slave to Christ, fulfills his role (“as Christ is the head of the church”) so that he can be free to live as he was designed to live. • Matter of perspective. To whom do you wish to be a slave?

That which stands, or is set, under, a foundation, beginning. Evidence—”elemos”…which denotes a proof, proving, test. HOPE FAITH

FAITH (cont.) • VINE—The main elements in faith in its relation to the invisible God, as distinct from faith in man, are especially brought out in the use of this noun and the corresponding verb. they are (1) a firm conviction, producing a full acknowledgement of God’s revelation or truth; (2) a full surrender to Him; (3) a conduct inspired by such surrender. Prominence is given to one or other of these elements according to the context. • a firm conviction, producing a full acknowledgement of God’s revelation or truth, Rom. 10.17, Jas. 2.19 (not just an opinion) • a personal surrenderto Him, Jas. 2.14-18 (doing matches believing) “Faith without works is dead” • a conduct inspired by such surrender. 2 Cor. 5.7 (“walk by faith, not sight”) This is seen vs. unseen (see Heb. 11.6) • Give examples from text of how THIS kind of faith is illustrated

  7. FAITH (cont.) Heb 11:1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. Heb 11:3 Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear (unseen). Heb 11:7 By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith. Heb 11:13 These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off(unseen), and were persuaded of [them], and embraced [them], and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth.   8. FAITH (cont.) • What FAITH does… • Believes the unbelievable (as believable) v. 3 • Motivates the unmovable (as movable) v. 7 • Receives the impossible (as possible) v. 13 • Sees the invisible (as visible) v. 27 • Doesn’t it take a lot of this kind of faith to stay married?

LOVE • Four words translated “love” (only three used in the Bible) • Eros (eros) intimate or romantic love, especially of sexual passion. • Storgos (storgos) to cherish affectionately with natural affection especially toward kindred, therefore, familial love. Romans 1.31 • Phileo (phileo) to be a friend to (fond of), hve affection for (denoting personal attachment, as a matter of sentiment or feeling, while agape is wider, embracing especially the judgment and the deliverate assent of the will as a matter of principle, duty and propriety. Titus 2.4; I Pet. 3.8 • Agape* (agape) benevolence, the act of doing good to another with no ulterior motive in mind. John. 3.16; Matthew 5.44; I Pet. 2.17 • This love is an action. It is demonstrated through active servicing in the way a person needs to be served (I Cor. 13) and commanded of the husband. A wife is never commanded to love her husband, why?

  10. RESPECT Eph. 5.33 However, let each one of you love his wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband. (ESV) Read different translations, then, Acts 10.35; 5.26; Lk. 22.2; 19.21; Rom. 13.3-4; I Jn. 4.18 -------------------- Phobeo (phobeo) to frighten, that is (passively) to be alarmed; by analogy to be in awe of, that is revere; be sore afraid, fear (exceedingly, reverence. I Pet. 2.18; 3.15; Heb. 11.23 (not afraid to inaction) It seems as though “fear, reverence, respect” either paralyzes to inaction or produces positive action but in a reverent way. What factors could produce either action and how might a wife’s demeanor change in a positive way if she reverenced, respected, biblically feared her husband as he loved her and submitted biblically to her? Eph. 5.21
