Background in LSI development and manufacturing • Importance of analog device (Ex : IF filter design for mobile phone) • High frequency (> 10GHz) and highly precise design (<0.25micro) • Needs strict robustness (<1%) = very narrow bandwidth of variance distribution • Actual (current) design & manufacturing process • Resistance and capacity values are influenced by manufacturing error • => Extremely low yield rate => higher cost • Designer : keep enough design margin by adjustment logic and dummy element • Need know-how and high skill • Variance is becoming relatively large against high precise design • Manufacturer : Trimming by manually • Need know-how and high skill • Not applicable for large scale number of devices IF : Intermediate Frequency

MIRAI project by AIST • Goal • Build basic technologies for continuous growth of semiconductor industry in future • Co-research system jointly organized “Industry-Government-Academia” circle • MIRAI in Japanese means future in English • Research area • SoC (System-on-a-Chip) technology related to material, process, device, logic, and their measurement and analysis technologies AIST : National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology

Expected benefits Applicable for large scale number of devices without manually Out-of-spec analog device is automatically and quickly adjusted High yield rate Even low precise device can be used by strong adjustment capability Smaller size and low electric power From separated packaging to the same silicon package as other devices Smaller size and cost reduction Evolvable Hardware (EHW) Put variable structure in LSI to be trimmed Apply Genetic Algorithm (GA) as “a trimmer” Proposed idea on EHW and its benefits Genetic Algorithm IF Filter Download Configuration bits

Results by newly developed EHW After adjustment • Evolved IF filter LSI • IF filter consists of 39 Gm elements • GA calculates 39 configuration bits • Observed result • Yield rate : 97% • Before : All among 30 are out-of-spec • After : 29 chips satisfy spec • Reduction of filter area : 60% • Reduction of power dissipation : 38% • GA for EHW to iSIGHT • For more convenience iSIGHT is selected as a platform to use their GA Before adjustment
