  1. Galileo Programme &the GRAIL projectAlvaro Urech Galileo 6th Framework Programme

  2. Galileo Constellation 30 satellites in three Medium Earth Orbit MEO planes at 23,200 km altitude 1 satellite per orbital plane is a spare Inclination of orbital planes 56 degrees One revolution 14 hours 4 min Ground track repeat 10 days

  3. Galileo Implementation Logic 2003 2005 2008 2010 Step 3 Step 4 Step 2 Step1

  4. GIOVE- A Test-Satellite GIOVE-A is Europe’s first test satellite placed in a Medium-Earth Orbit. The purpose of the GIOVE-A test satellite is to: • transmit the Galileo signals from one of the orbits to be used by the constellation – received successfully on the 12th Jan 2006. • test various critical technologies, including the rubidium atomic clock and the signal generator. • measure the physical parameters of the orbit and the particular environment in which the future constellation is to operate.

  5. Galileo User Segment • Galileo infrastructure • Space segment • Ground segment • Products delivered by the infrastructure are SIGNALS • The users are interested by SERVICES • The Galileo USER SEGMENT developed through the 6th FP is defined as the segment that translates the SIGNALS into SERVICES for the final users

  6. Open Access Free to air; Mass market; Simple positioning Commercial Encrypted; High accuracy; Guaranteed service Safety of Life Open Service + Integrity and Authentication of signal Encrypted; Integrity; Continuous availability Public Regulated Search and Rescue Near real-time; Precise; Return link feasible Galileo – Five Services EU Transport Council Decision - December 2004 Navigation SAR

  7. Galileo Application Overview Integrity (error-free), Standards, Regulation, Continuity, Availability, Accuracy Low costs, Low power cons., Small size, Friendly use, Best perf. accordingly High precision, High accuracy, High reliability

  8. 6th FP activities • 5-year period (2002-2006), Galileo budget : 110 million€ • Management of the Galileo 6th FP activities transferred by the Commission to the Galileo Joint Undertaking Themes: • Applications • Development of GNSS (EGNOS+Galileo) services and applications in several major user communities: • All major transport domains • LBS, Scientific and Professional domains, Agriculture… • Mission • Standardisation, frrequency, certification • Definition and evolution of the mission • Receivers • Development of tools • Development of commercially oriented receivers • Local Elements

  9. GNSS Introduction in the Rail Sector GRAIL Project Project objective: to support the introduction of GNSS in the Rail market, with a special emphasis on ERTMS/ETCS. Co-financed by the GJU (50%) Duration: Two years from 31-Aug-05 Building onto previous initiatives: GADEROS, RUNE, LOCOPROL/LOCOLOC, INTEGRAIL, etc.

  10. Project Objectives • To achieve a common specification for the GNSS subsystem for the • Enhanced Odometry application • Enhanced ETCS applications (train awakening, train integrity, absolute positioning) • To develop and test a prototype of the GNSS subsystem for the Enhanced Odometry and the Enhanced ETCS applications • Tests in a real ERTMS/ETCS line • Tests in a lab environment • To study the complementary aspects • economic issues • legal issues • development of GNSS local elements specific for railways consistent with the objectives 1 and 2

  12. Project Logic

  13. Current status • On going activities: • Definition of GNSS based System Requirement Specification. • Architecture definition for the different applications. • Safety Analysis. • Cost-Benefit Analysis. • First achievements: • Application Survey and Analysis. • Acceptance Criteria. • Legal and Regulatory Analysis.
