Developing the Folding 3-Wheeler

This project aims to develop a folding three-wheeled wheelchair that seamlessly blends the kinematic advantages of a 3-wheeler with the portability of a folding design. The primary focus is to allow users to gain better access to public transportation while ensuring safe and comfortable transport. The wheelchair will be crafted from economical, readily available materials, with an ergonomic design that prioritizes user comfort. Additionally, we will incorporate features like modularity and easy-to-manufacture components to enhance usability and practicality.

  1. Developing the Folding 3-Wheeler March 6, 2007

  2. Background/Justification • Allow user to gain access to public transportation. • Facilitate the process of transporting the user and the wheelchair safely.

  3. Goal • To design a folding three wheeled wheelchair that has the kinematic advantages of a 3-wheeler, but the portability of a folding 4-wheeler.

  4. Original Functional Requirements • Fold compactly when not in use • Be comfortable and ergonomic • Light enough so the user can carry it

  5. But then…

  6. Primary Functional Requirements • Ability to fold compactly • Made from cheap and available materials • Easy to manufacture • Sturdy

  7. Design Parameters

  8. Cheap and Available Materials • Design constraints • Joints must be prismatic or revolute. • Use of only 25mm pipe. • 26” wheels. • Limited tool set. • Design Freedoms • Use of bike parts

  9. Easy to Manufacture • Timeline to completion: 3 days • Can extend production time to 4 days. • Cost vs. Benefit

  10. Sturdy • Sacrifice portability for rigidity?

  11. Current Brainstorming/ Strategies

  12. Countermeasures • Modularity • Easily detachable features • “snap together” • Only uses one “extra” tool

  13. Questions?
