  3. What is Long Term Care (LTC)? • LTC is a variety of services and supports to meet the health or personal care needs over an extended period of time. Most LTC is non-skilled personal care assistance, such as help in performing everyday Activity of Daily Living (ADLs) • ADLs - Bathing, Dressing, Using the Toilet, Transferring (to or from bed or chair), caring for incontinence, eating. • The goal of long term care is to help you maximize your independence at a time you are unable to be fully independent.

Where is LTC Provided? • Most LTC is provided at Home - Either in the home of the person receiving care or at a family member’s home. • For people who cannot stay at home, there are a variety of residential care settings. • Assisted Living, Care and Board Homes • Continuing Care Retirement Communities (CCRC’s) • Nursing Homes provide more extensive 24 hour supervision in addition to their personal care.

  5. What are My Risks of Needing LTC? • About 70% of individuals over age 65 will require at least some type of long term care. Over 40% will need care in a nursing home for some period of time. • Factors that increase your risk include: • Age - Risk increases as you get older • Marital Status - Single people are more likely to need care from a paid provider • Gender - Women are at a higher risk, primarily because they tend to live longer. • Health & Family History

How Much Care Might I need? • On Average, someone age 65 today will need some long term care services for 3 years. • If you need LTC, you may need one of more of the following: • Care or assistance with activities of daily living in your home from an unpaid caregiver who can be a family member or friend. • Services at home from a nurse, home/health care aide, therapist or homemaker • Care in any of a variety of long term care facilities

What Does Long Term Care Cost? • The average costs in the US (in 2009) are: • $198/day for a semi-private room in a nursing home • $219/day for a private room in a nursing home • $3,131/month for care in an Assisted Living Facility • $21/hour for a Home Health Aide • $19/hour for a Homemaker services • $67/day for care in an Adult Day Health Care Center

What is Long Term Care Insurance? • Long Term Care Insurance is a type of insurance developed specifically to cover the costs of long term care services, most of which are not covered by traditional health insurance or Medicare. These include services in your home such as Activities of Daily Living as well as care in a variety of facility and community settings. • You can select a range of care options and benefits that allow you to get the services you need in the settings that suit you best.
