The Phrasal Verbs • Grow up (int) – become an adult • When I grow up, I want to be an English teacher. • Screw up* • Go on* • Run into (non) – meet by accident or chance • I ran into my English teacher at Emart yesterday. • Fall behind (int) – make less progress, begin to perform poorly • I’m falling behind in my English class. • Get off of st (sop) – stop someone’s addiction • We need to get him off of drugs. • Perk up (sop) – feel better or happier • I always perk up when I see my English teacher.

  6. The Phrasal Verbs • Get into* • Run away (int) – escape from somewhere • My cat ran away yesterday. I’m very sad. • Cut off (sop) – cut, disconnect • I was chopping onions and cut off my finger. • We didn’t pay our bills, so they cut off our electricity. • Put on (sop) – to turn on st • We need to put on some music and dance • Make up* • Be out of st (non) – to quit or leave • This class is too hard. I’m out of here. • Skimp on (non) – use less of something • Please don’t skimp on the butter.

You’re in! • Sneak up on sb (non) – approach someone quietly • Please don’t sneak up on your teacher. • Work out (sop) – find the answer to • I can’t work out this problem. • Deal with* • Tick off (sop) – make angry • Please don’t tick me off.

The Idioms and Other Expressions • Boobs – breasts • I think western women show too much of their boobs. • Hoity-toity – rich and fancy • Shinsaegae is a very hoity-toity department store. • Funny bone – a sense of humor • This is so funny, but you’re not laughing. Is your funny bone broken? • To be on board – to be in agreement • I am not onboard with this idea. • Cut corners – to make something quickly, cheaply, and of poor quality • Please don’t cut corners in my class. Take your time and you will do good work.

The Idioms and Other Expressions • Out of date – old fashioned • His clothes are so out of date! • To be in a better place – phrase meaning sb is dead • My hamster is in a better place now. • Queer – gay (used mostly by gays) • I wonder if he is queer? • Busted – caught • I tried to sneak into my house at 1AM but my mom busted me.
