  1. Sistine Chapel This is where the Cardinals meet to elect a new pope. They are cut off from the rest of the world to maintain privacy. The ceiling was designed by Michelangelo Michelangelo was known more as a sculptor.

  2. The Pieta This representation of Mary holding the body of Jesus is known as a Pieta. Michelangelo sculpted “The Pieta.” Renaissance artwork focuses on humanism.

  3. Peter Peter is considered to be the first pope. He is often depicted as holding the key to the gates of heaven.

  4. Petrified This used to be a tree….now it’s a rock. To be petrified is to be scared stiff (like a rock). Petroleum is oil drilled from the ground.

  6. The Key The layout of St. Peter’s Square is in the shape of a lock and/or key depending on how it is viewed. Notice the Cruciform shape of the Basilica itself.
