  10. Printing Techniques Lithography Block Printing • Used to print on paper and card fabrics. • Simple method once stamp has been made. • Stamps can be intricate or simple. Cutting them can be difficult by hand. • Used to print on paper and card. • Low cost method of printing. • Provides clear images. Screen Printing Embossing • Use to print on to a wide variety of materials including fabric, paper, and metal. • Little waste of ink. • Only allows simple designs. • Can be used to emphasise : • Part of a design. • As a surface finish or paper or card. • To suggest a quality product.

Paper/card When working with paper/card materials candidates should: be able to identify common papers such as layout, cartridge, tracing, grid, card, corrugated card, duplex board, solid white board, understand the different properties and uses of such materials both as a media for communication and as a material for manufacturing products such as packaging; understand the availability of common components e.g. to fasten, seal, hang, pour, join, bind, index; understand that many paper based boards are laminated to other materials and that the composition can be adjusted to create different properties for specific purposes e.g. foil-backed for food packaging; understand the stock forms for paper/card materials i.e. size, thickness, weight and colour; have a basic understanding of the source of pulp and the primary processes involved in conversion to workable materials. Materials – Timber (wood) Timber based materials When working with timber based materials candidates should: be able to identify common timbers such as pine, mahogany, teak, ash, beech used in the manufacture of products be able to identify common manufactured boards i.e. MDF, plywood, chipboard, blockboard, hardboard; understand the different properties and uses of such materials within commercial products; understand that many timber-based materials are manufactured therefore the composition can be adjusted to create different properties for specific purposes; understand the stock forms for timber based materials i.e. rough sawn, PSE, sheet sizes and mouldings; have a basic understanding of the source of timber and the primary processes involved in conversion to workable materials.   26. Examination Words Certain words and phrases are used in the Examination – You must understand what they mean and be able to apply this knowledge when answering Examination questions. Annotate - Add brief notes/reasons, to explain ideas, to an illustration – Remember that you must be critical/analytical in order to access the top range of marks. Calculate - Implies that a numerical answer is needed. Complete - Enter an answer in the space provided. Describe - State in words the important points of the topic. Dimension - Add measurements to a drawing Draw - Use a straight edge, pencil, fine-liner (Set square etc) to help produce a Drawing e.g. Orthographic. Explain - Write an explanation of a topic / point that includes justification of the answer i.e. Why / How / Because etc.

Examination Words Discuss - Develop/debate an argument to justify your answer/point of view etc. Evaluate - Assess/appraise once work against a criteria etc. Free Hand - Using a pencil, fine liner and your hand to produce an illustration or sketch without the use of rulers and drawing instruments etc. Give a reason - How / Why – a reason which applies knowledge of this subject e.g. Expanded Polystyrene is used for packaging because ….. Sketch - Informal ‘freehand’ drawings to illustrate an idea / design or point, without the use of rulers and drawing instruments. Label - Identify parts of a product / drawing etc. e.g. leader lines, key etc.

  28. How to Annotate you designs Always include the following when annotating in an exam question : Manufacture How would the product be made and WHY is this method the best choice? EG.I would make this product using CAM. I would use the laser cutter to cut the pieces because it is very precise and all the parts will be identical. Materials What will you make the product from and WHY? EG. The product would be made from MDF because it is low cost, easy to shape and can be used with a variety of finishes. Finishes What finish will you use to decorate the product and WHY? EG. I will use varnish to finish the product because it will provide a gloss finish and protect the product from liquids. Target Market How does the product appeal to the target market? How do you know this? EG. This design would appeal to children as it has many functions and it is brightly coloured. Joining How would the components be joined together and WHY? Would you use a type of joint / adhesive / or another method? EG. I would join the pieces together using PVA glue and leave them to dry in a vice for added strength. Safety What are the health and safety issues of this product? How would you prevent them and protect the user? EG. This product may have small parts I need to ensure this is mentioned on the packaging and provide an age limit for the product.
