  2. My Bug Drawings: Before

  3. Online Pictures • Real bug Drawing

  4. My Bug drawing: After • Many things changed when I redrew my pictures. I made them much more detailed. I had never really known how intricate bugs are. I drew what I saw rather than underside which has so many little parts. I had never looked at the tiny details that are located under the pill bugs exoskeleton. I have a much better appreciation for bugs now that I learned a little about them. They are not something to be scared of (well sometimes you have reason to be scared), they are misunderstood and represented in a very negative view.

  5. Bugscope Picture

  6. Bugscope Session • Lady Bugs- Spots are a warning to others. Defense mechanism for the ladybug. Taste/ smell bad • Flies- you can tell males and females apart by looking at their eyes. • Flying Insects- most have compound eyes • Ants- rely on chemical signals, smells and tastes to navigate

  7. Features: • Three body parts: head, thorax, abdomen • One prominent pair of antennae (one inconspicuous pair) • Simple eyes • Seven pairs of legs • Seven separate segments on thorax • Paired appendagesat end of abdomen called uropods • Color varies from dark gray to white with or without pattern

  8. Detailed drawing of the Pill Bug

  9. Pill Bug Facts: • Omnivores or scavengers • Feed on dead or decaying plants or animals • Breathe with gills • Restricted to areas with high humidity, under rocks or logs, in leaf litter or in crevices. • Roll up into a ball when disturbed

  10. Continued… • Not insects but crustaceans as are lobsters, shrimp and crabs. • Other names are sow bugs, wood lice, potato bugs, and roly-pollies • 5 to 15 mm long • Exoskeleton consists of shield-like plates • Safe to handle • They do not bite, sting or transmit diseases to humans.

  11. Impact on Ecosystem • Positive • Minimal soil improvement • Food sources for other animals • Negative • Can eat and damage plants in greenhouses and southern states

  12. NSES Applied to Bugscope • Life Science Content Standard C • Grade 5-8 • Reproduction and Heredity • The Characteristics of an organism can be described in terms of a combination of traits. Some traites are inherited and others result from interactions with the environment You can use this to describe the traits that each bug has and how they differ from other bugs. You can also look at bugs from different regions and how their environment can change the traits they carry.

  13. Authenticity • When you use things such as microscopes, you are putting the students in the drivers seat. They get to guide their own learning and be hands on. They get to ask the questions they want answered and look at the things they want to look at. You do need to guide them to look at certain things but they are also allowed to guided it the way they want.

  14. Three Literature Sources • Bug IQ Book • It very hands on and lots of activities. Yet educational! • The Very Hungry Catepillar • On Beyond Bugs: All About Insects • Dr. Seuss books are always great!

  15. Connections to other Content Areas • Why use electrons • Writing- developing questions • Inquiry types of writing • Observation skills • Creative writing(interview a bug, life as a worm) • Art- Scaling • Math • Magnification • Mulitiplication • Scaling
