  2. Basic Facts • Ruled from 51 BC – 30 BC • Life was filled with drama • She was Macedonian (Not Egyptian) • Her father was Ptolemy XII. He left the throne to Cleopatra and Ptolemy XIII. • Soon after the death of their father, her brother had her exiled.

  3. Caesar and Cleopatra • Julius Caesar (Roman general) went to Egypt and Cleopatra • wanted his help. Since she was exiled, she role herself in a • rug. • Caesar helped her regain the throne. • Lived in Rome until Caesar was killed. The theory is that he • was killed since people were worried the two of them would be • too powerful. • Cleopatra and her son returned to Egypt. • Soon after she returned, Cleopatra’s brother was killed some • blamed her.

Cleopatra and Mark Antony • After Caesar’s death, the Roman Empire was not doing well. • Mark Antony took over the Eastern Roman Empire • To protect Egypt, Cleopatra went to Antony for help. • He fell in love with her. • He wanted to make Cleopatra his queen. • Romans became very upset and did not trust Antony • Antony lost power and support of Rome • Octavian declared war on them. • Lack of power would mean lack of Cleopatra’s love • Wrote a letter saying she was going to die. • He was heartbroken and committed suicide. • It is believed that he died in her arms.

Cleopatra and Octavian • Egypt was still struggling as a country. • Octavian became the ruler of Rome and wanted to take over Egypt. • Cleopatra tried to charm Octavian to convince him not to take over Egypt. • He did not fall in love with her. • He ordered for her to be taken prisoner. • Could not live live as a prisoner so she killed herself • Allowed herself to be bitten by a poisonous snake. • She was buried next to Mark Antony • Her son was executed so he could not have any claim to the throne. • William Shakespeare wrote the famous Elizabethan play Antony and Cleopatra. His play is considered a tragedy.
