  2. Lenten Reflection and Prayer • Prayer: • Dear Jesus, thank you for the opportunity to receive a good education. Please help me to do my best at my schoolwork, even when I get frustrated and want to give up. Please help me to use my time and talents to help others who may be struggling.

  3. The Sacraments An outward sign, instituted by Christ, to give grace.

  4. What is a sacrament? • Is an effective sign of grace, instituted by Christ and entrusted to the Church, by which divine life is dispersed to us through the work of the Holy Spirit. There are seven sacraments. • Remember when we celebrate ONE of the sacraments the promised grace or gift is present. • Actual Grace – free and undeserved gift from God that helps us to conform our lives to his will.

The sacraments are associated with three divine calls (mission) • A call to a correct and moral attitude – the Church’s teaching instruct baptized about the will of Christ concerning their moral choices. • A call to personal holiness – Baptism is a call to personal holiness. • A call to worship – worship God at church so that you may acquire grace to complete your mission

  6. The Seven Sacraments… • The 3 sacraments of Initiation initiate new members into the faith community, remind us of the earthly Jesus and his risen presence today. • Baptism - removal of sins • Confirmation - bestowing of the Holy spirit • Eucharist – receiving of the body and blood of Christ

  7. The sacraments of Penance and Reconciliation and Anointing of the Sick • A celebration of spiritual and physical healing • Penance and Reconciliation – God’s forgiveness of the sinner – spiritual healing • Anointing the Sick – pray and laying of hands for those who can not be active due to their sickness. Can also be received before surgery, after recovering from illness or if illness worsens.

  8. Sacraments of Communion – Our Church celebrates its ministry to all people • Holy orders – with prayer and laying of hands men are ordained and serve the Church as bishops, priests or deacons. • Matrimony – celebrates the love between a man and women, and their vow to serve each other and bring new life into the world

  9. Signs of God’s Power • The Church is the “key” that opens the door for sacraments • God provided us with sacramental signs • a sign of a sacred act or thing • Examples: water = baptism; wedding rings=marriage • Circumcision was a sign between the Jewish people’s invisible covenant and God.

  10. Sacramental Characters • 3 of the sacraments imprint a special character to our souls– Baptism, Confirmation and Holy Orders • It configures us to Christ, distinguishes forever as followers of Christ, and helps to cooperate with grace • We can only receive them once in our life!

  11. Minister of the Sacrament • Christis the principal minister in the of all the sacraments • He uses priests as visible ministers • Matrimony does not require ordained men to provided the sacrament, all others do

  12. Seven primary ways that God’s grace is active in our lives • We are brought to new life. – Baptism • We are strengthened by the Holy Spirit. – Confirmation • We share in Jesus’ sacrifice, death, and Resurrection. – Eucharist • Our sins are forgiven. – Reconciliation and Repentance • We are healed of illness. – Anointing of the Sick • Serve others through a special call to minister in the church. – Holy Orders • Some are called to share love and the creation of new life in marriage. – Holy Matrimony

Video summary… • We will be studying the sacraments in depth until Spring Break, starting with Anointing the Sick and Holy Matrimony on Monday. • 7 Sacraments of the Church • Please read Chapters 14 and 15 • Answer the following questions • Pg 195: 1, 3, 6, 7, 9 • Pg 208: 1, 2, 4, 6, 7, 8, 10, 13, 14, 15
